Gingrich Regrets That Everybody Misconstrued His Pelosi Climate Change Ad

Back in May, Newt Gingrich claimed that the “climate change” PSA with Nancy Pelosi, made for an organization founded by Al Gore, wasn’t a love-fest, but rather a demonstration of how the right shouldn’t be afraid to debate the left. Now Gingrich says the reason he took flack for it was that people didn’t understand the message he was trying to convey:

Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich (R-Ga.) said Tuesday that he regrets making a commercial with then-Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) on the need to address climate change.

Gingrich, who partnered with Pelosi while she was Speaker for the 2008 ad, said the spot was “misconstrued,” and for that reason, he wouldn’t do it again.

“I was trying to make a point that we shouldn’t be afraid to debate the left, even on the environment,” Gingrich said on WGIR radio of the 30-second television commercial. “Obviously it was misconstrued, and it’s probably one of those things I wouldn’t do again.”

Misconstrued? What part of “we agree that our country must take action to address climate change” are we misunderstanding?

Much has changed since January.

Here’s the ad that you thought you heard:

PELOSI: Hi! I’m Nancy Pelosi, life-long Democrat and Speaker of the House.

GINGRICH: And I’m Newt Gingrich, life-long Republican and I used to be Speaker of the House.

PELOSI: We don’t always see eye to eye, do we Newt?

GINGRICH: No, but we do agree: our country must take action to address climate change.

PELOSI: We need cleaner forms of energy, and we need them fast.

GINGRICH: If enough of us demand action from our leaders, we can spark the innovation we need.

PELOSI: Go to WeCanSolveIt.org. Together, we can do this.

And here’s the ad (I mean, “debate”) that Gingrich seems to recall making:

PELOSI: Hi! I’m Nancy Pelosi, life-long Democrat and Speaker of the House.

GINGRICH: And I’m Newt Gingrich, life-long Republican and I used to be Speaker of the House.

PELOSI: We don’t always see eye to eye, do we Newt?

GINGRICH: No, not ever — and I mean never! Especially not on this climate change sham you and your fellow hucksters are trying to put over on the world.

PELOSI: We need cleaner forms of energy, and we need them fast.

GINGRICH: What we need is energy independence and increased domestic drilling so a gallon of gas doesn’t cost more than one of your eyelifts.

PELOSI: Go to WeCanSolveIt.org. Together, we can do this.

Gingrich: Do what? Destroy the economy with grift-a-palooza so a few eco-hypocrites can get richer? Count me out.
*****

Maybe a talented editor could help Newt create the ad he seems to think he co-starred in.

Update: American Elephant created this Photoshop revolving around the “We Can Solve It” PSA. Clearly AE misconstrued the ad as much as I did.
