A.P. Headline Turns Up the Heat

By Doug Powers  •  August 2, 2011 01:40 PM

**Written by Doug Powers

There are those who think that the “heat index” is just a way to make the temperatures sound higher than they are in order to help peddle the global warming theory, but the Associated Press has found a way to really inflate the number: Just take the Fahrenheit reading, mistake that for Celsius, and voilà… it’s a lot hotter:

Northeast braces for temps near boiling point

NEW YORK (AP) — The extreme heat that’s been roasting the eastern U.S. is only expected to get worse, and residents are bracing themselves for temperatures near and above boiling point.

Weather service heat warnings and advisories have been issued Friday from Ohio to Maine.

The high temperatures and smothering humidity will force up the heat indexes. Boston’s 99 degrees on Friday could feel like 105 degrees; Philadelphia’s 102 degrees like 114 degrees and Washington, D.C.’s 103 degrees may seem the same as a melting 116 degrees.

On the upside for you seafood fans, the oceans are apparently about to be loaded with freshly steamed lobster.

Milton Wolf has a screen-grab, but since the story has been unchanged for several days now, it may live on forever — or at least until cyberspace melts.

The good news is that, using the AP formula, this winter when it’s 10 degrees, it’ll really be 50 degrees.

Those AP fact-checkers must be preoccupied with digging into Sarah Palin’s next book or something.

I’m going to go out on a limb and believe that article wasn’t ‘edited’. It’s incredibly small and resembles more of a blurb than ‘news story’.

Seriously, that article is not going to sway any public opinion on the issue.

It just makes Yahoo/AP look incredibly stupid.

I can agree with you on that and that you are probably right in that it wasn’t edited. There are three points that could be made though. First it shows that this author of this piece of work was lazy in that they did not fact check prior to publishing. Second, what does it say about AP that it is allowing this to stay up on it’s site as is when it is factually incorrect. Thirdly, imagine the outcry from the MSM if this type of thing had happened on a Conservative blog or even the Foxnews website.

These are probably written by some interns that look at a weather forecast and consolidate a location into a story (this instance the northeast). Their not primary weather stories. They aren’t seen by the masses.

I get that it jives with the opinion that global warming is pushed by the media.

You could have a point. I just think this is stupidity. Could have even been someone in Europe/Australia, etc that wasn’t fully educated on that we use Fahrenheit over here. I dunno. Sounds more likely since the claims of ‘boiling point’ weather are pretty outrageous to any rational sole.

I think I’ve seen the heat index used so much more widely now than before. I like that they use it because it indicates the true danger to elderly, children, etc. It’s just not scientifically correct to compare the two as some use it interchangeably it seems.

I took a speech class this summer. I made a speech on globull warming. Not one of the people in the class had ever heard of Climategate. Not even the teacher. Not one had wondered why there are boulders deposited by glaciers in Central Park, even though the teacher himself is from NYC. Not one had ever heard of the Medieval Warming Period. Not one of them knew that parts of The Sahara weren’t always a desert. Not one of them knew that the earth’s orbit and axis tilt weren’t constant. After my speech, the teacher said, “Wow…it’s all a bunch of propaganda, isn’t it?” Many in the class had shocked looks on their faces as I exposed them to the truth for the very first time in their indoctrinated lives.

As I have said here many times before, Enemy Number One in this country is the media and this article is just more evidence of that.

Even more reason that these types of stories should be verified before publishing. The AP wants to be considered credible, but then it allows garbage like this to be printed using their name and then does not correct the mistake. Sure it may not be seen by everyone, but does that make the crediblilty issue any better for them?

Yup. When I was in my 20′s and 30′s, I would think nothing of going out for a run in 86 degree, or higher, weather. Now, if the temperature is higher that 82, I don’t even want to go out for a walk!

Controversely, here in Oregon ( we’re still waiting for summer! ) In fact KGW in Portland reported that as bad as it’s sucked here, Seattle had only 70 MINUTES of 80+ deg. weather year to date.

This has been a total write off for the PNW. I’m only yoo happy to add all that heat to the Bammie Misery Index though?

From the leftist POV, the schools have exceeded all expectations in indoctrinating students to the level of thought and logic we see in students today and as well in many graduates of public indoctrination centers of the past few decades.

You are correct, though, the Dept of Ed must go. The fed has no business having that Dept and wasting taxpayer dollars in its operation.

The purpose of our schools isn’t to educate, it’s to indoctrinate – and they’ve been very successful.

Well, we are way past the boiling point here in Oklahoma. Today was 111°F and tomorrow is supposed to be 117°F. Most of July has been over 100°F. The saving grace is the humidity is below 20%, but now we are getting fires. A burn ban in effect in most areas, and I thank God they haven’t included grilling in the burn ban so my Hasty-Bake lives.

BTW, 117°F is hotter than an billy goat in a pepper patch ;)

Correct. It’s not scientifically correct to compare the two.

Unfortunately, many reporters are truly ignorant about anything the least bit scientific.
