GOP Debate Open Thread; Updated
**Written by Doug Powers
Tip-off for the GOP debate tonight is just after 9 eastern on Fox News. Romney, Pawlenty, Paul, Cain, Gingrich, Santorum, Bachmann and Huntsman will be taking part, so here’s a thread for discussion, or even if you just want to check in and see how it’s going.
Unfortunately I don’t have time to come up with a comprehensive drinking game, so we’ll just make it an open bar to go with the open thread. Quickly off the top of my head though you’ll stay quenched if you drink whenever Newt says “bold, new solutions” or whenever Huntsman touts his Jeb Bush, Jr. endorsement but mumbles the “junior” part under his breath. Double shot if Pawlenty says “Obamneycare.”
I’ll post a video link here once the coverage gets underway. Enjoy the night!
Updates:
Live video at Fox is here.
Jonah Goldberg has the best Tweet of the day (h/t HAP):

Video clips from the debate are here.
Looking back, I can’t believe Romney’s people didn’t prepare some sort of comeback to “elitist” jokes that you just knew were inevitable — like this one:

These things have to be won in the primary. Thats where the real choices are. The general will only have 2 candidates and one of them will be Obama. That will be an unbridled Obama as he will not be worried about reelection. That is really scary sounding to me.
And why is it we can’t teach these politicians what we want them to do. Pol’s do that. They flow with the wind so they can be elected. They reject their own principles to get votes. They are everyone to everyman.
We need to keep our voices in their ear and Karl Roves voice out. The people need to speak up and let our leaders on that stage know what we want so if they are elected, they don’t compromise every thing away because someone will blame them later. Right Weepy?
Like, for example John Boehner?
I don’t know what he believes, and I’m not sure he does either. On the face of things, I’d say “Sure Boehner would be a much better President than Obama”. Then reality hits home. Boehner says he got 98% of what he wanted in the debt deal. I hope that isn’t true, but it’s what he said.
I think the debt deal was bad, as in “indefensibly bad”. It amounts to total victory for those who want the status quo, and don’t want to make any hard choices, and it is owned by all but 161 members of the House, 95 of whom were Democrat, and couldn’t get past the lack of immediate taxation or even the semblance of a cut.
66 Republicans voted against it. So out of 428 (2 vacancies and 5 not voted) we can trust maybe 66. That means 362 members want what we have now, or even more.
Sorry. I don’t see “anybody but Obama” as being a winning strategy for the country’s survival. We have to have a real leader, someone who will take representatives where they don’t necessarily want to go; someone who can explain to the public why things have to be done, and how.
Ted Kennedy nailed Romney as a flip-flopper back in ’94. Romney is. He’s as empty a suit as Obama is. He has supported all the same kinds of liberty-stealing initiatives like health care and climate change. I don’t know what he’ll say next week or next year, and I don’t want to know.
America has to do better, or it will not matter.
Yes it does….
This message was seen posted on a yard sign in someone’s yard in Atlanta:
“If you voted for Obama in 2008 to prove you were not a racist, vote for someone else in 2012 to prove you are not an idiot.”
I haven’t even viewed the comments prior to #201, but I’m certain there are several who say that if Romney turns out to be our nominee, or if Paul doesn’t, etc., they are going to sit out this election. I question their motives, because refusing to vote for our nominee will guarantee that Obama gets re-elected and as far as I’m concerned that is not an option.
Four more years of his control via appointed officials, his veto power and Executive Orders will fracture our Country much worse than it already is.
So be a defeatist if you wish, by not voting for our person, whomever it is, but keep your mouth shut when it turns out worse than you imagined.
WRONG!!
Immigration Stance:
“Let’s respect the hardworking, accomplished legal immigrants who sacrificed much, contributed selflessly, and helped build America into the greatest melting pot on earth! We need to understand the importance of America’s fair immigration laws.” -Facebook post(5/16/2010)
+ Supportive of Arizona’s immigration law– first to stand with Governor Brewer “Secure the Border” effort
+ Supports sending troops to the U.S. Mexico border and completion of a fence to secure America’s southern border
+ Opposed to amnesty for illegal immigrants
+ Opposed to the DREAM act
+ Opposes boycotts of states who implement state immigration laws
+ Supportive of legal immigration

Please do some research before making statements that are not true!
The Republican nominee will be Perry, Romney, Christie, Bachman, Palin or Condoleezza Rice. Out here in the real world no one else has a shot. I will be joyful to see any one of them replace Obama. Whoever sits that choice out or votes third party is the real RINO. Our country cannot stand four more years of Obama. Those who think we have to destroy the Republican Party to set the stage for some sort of conservative revolution will be the cause of the end of America as we know it if they prevail in their strategy of “the Republicans aren’t perfect so let just let the Democrats win again.”
Do people here really think there is some sort of governing majority that can be made of people who think Sean Hannity, Alan West, John Boehner and even Sarah Palin are all too liberal?
Whats wrong with a Santorum/Bachmann ticket?
Why can’t we pick a ticket and make it happen?
jackblack – Nothing at all wrong with that ticket but I don’t see Santorum’s campaign catching fire. Perhaps if enough conservatives back him in the primaries I could be wrong.

Governor Palin Tells Reporters at the Iowa State Fair that Barack Obama Is Responsible for the Downgrade
http://conservatives4palin.com/2011/08/governor-palin-tells-reporters-at-the-iowa-state-fair-that-barack-obama-is-responsible-for-the-downgrade.html
The strategy isn’t “…let the Democrats win again”. The strategy is, “win, or let the country be destroyed quickly rather than slowly, so we can start rebuilding it within our lifetimes.”
A Republican progressive in the White House gains us nothing, in the long run. So, why play the same freaking game we’ve been playing for decades?
Sorry, not buying the snake oil this time. Either a conservative, or nothing.
Tim Pawlenty is attacking Michele Bachmann because he is well aware that he has zero chance of winning any state or even coming as close as last place in any state. He has allied with Mitt Romney for a primary spot as VP. Not guaranteed, but close. RINO’s of a feather dung together.
Supported John McCain when she shouldn’t have.
Says she could support Perry.
Says she could support Romney.
Says anybody is better than Obama.
Romney has no problem with governmental mandates on individuals. Perry wants to smooch and snuggle illegal aliens and their get. McCain proved himself a snake time and again.
Don’t see her enthusiasm for Bachmann (a fellow “glass ceiling” warrior…), or Cain by name, first in mind is the establishment Republicans.
Ask her just one question: does she believe in comprehensive immigration reform, after we “secure the border”?
She favors amnesty.
Why do they stick Herman Cain on the end space? I think this is at least the 2nd debate where he was on the end, not in the middle.
Heard today it will be Perry/Rubio.
I’d love to hear a REAL debate, not one with idiotic questions. Submission? Give me a break. Stupid, stupid, stupid.
In Her Own Words
At about 03:27.
In a nation of 70 million, at a time 40 years before personal computers, Germany had the capability of processing and shipping 21 million people, based on various criteria but primarily their Jewish heritage, to a variety of death camps, and to process and redistribute their wealth in the process, while keeping up a campaign to keep the world and the Jews not yet rounded up ignorant of what was happening.
We have computer and other advanced technology. We have no need to maintain secrecy, for we don’t need to murder 21 million people. It is therefore inconceivable, in a nation of 300 million people, with electronic identity tracking and information exchange, a nation which is able to process and incarcerate millions of citizen criminals without difficulty, that we need even ask the question, “How do we deport 12 million people who are in the country illegally?”. Inconceivable.
Huh?

Romney and governmental mandates–I assume you mean required health insurance?
I DETEST gov’t interference but after being involved in health care for half my life we need to do something. I don’t care if people have insurance as long as they sign waivers saying they will be responsible for their medical bills. Right now, WE are paying for them.
Millions of people who can’t bother to get insurance (I didn’t say afford)but do buy boats and snowmobiles, crash, run up hundreds of thousands of dollars in bills and cry bankruptcy–so WE have to pay their bills instead. For those of you who are against required health insurance PLEASE come up with a better solution and I will promote it. Right now we are bankrupting Emergency medicine.
Not as fast as the illegal aliens are.
But I do agree healthcare did need to be addressed, but not it cramdown manor or ideology.
Don’t get me started on the illegals and medicine….. (-: That is one reason I would have preferred somebody from the West who might understand how truly destructive the illegals are to different financial arenas but I digress…
Lived in Canada for 10 yrs–never want to live around socialized medicine again–but unless you have another solution (vs. require all to get insurance or sign a waiver) I don’t think you should make that one the reason for going against Mitt.
Unless one has been involved in medicine they might not understand just what an enormous problem it really is. Now,I don’t live in Mass and if they didn’t want socialized medicine THEN go after him–but sounds like they were dopey enough to actually want it.
I hope I am not coming across as advocating socialized medicine! No way, no how! If Mitt wants that or something resembling Obamacare then I will actively campaign against him. I just mean the requiring people to buy insurance or sign a waiver stuff.
Back in agreement with you, silly me always thought that if government wanted us, the taxpayer, to have health insurance they would of given us a nice tax deduction on our 1040′s … nope, it turns out that 51% don’t pay any Federal taxes and many actually get cash back, they are now to get healthcare as well.
That cost is minor and manageable versus the total destruction of Obamacare. We do NOT have to pick from either of those 2 choices.
An Appelate Court has just ruled that the government requirement to purchase health insurance is un-Constitutional. I expect that Decision to be upheld in the Supreme Court, 5-4. Where do we go from here, Old Goat? I’m with you, we need to do something short of socialized medicine, but you’re the pro, I’m not. What say you?
Health savings accounts.
That’s a consequence of the intentional failure of our executive branch to implement effective enforcement of our immigration laws, not the result of a poor policy regarding medical care.
Illegal immigrants are only part of the problem Roland. We also have legal immigrants, the unemployed, welfare receipients, the elderly poor as well as the true emergency medical attention users crowding the system.
Many of those folks have no way of creating a medical savings account because they have little, or no income. How do we deal with them?
It’s really a mess and it’s obvious a one size fits all solution has it’s limitations.
It is the assumption the broad society has an obligation to guarantee free medical care that creates the mess. No matter what ‘fix’ you make, it will still create a mess.
Private charity is vastly better than government “charity” at wisely supply the needs of the truly indigent, as long as the private charities are not being overrun with millions of people from third world societies.
The entitlement mentality is destroying us. You are not natually entitled to someone else supplying you with free medical care.
You should have to be grateful for it. When the necessity for gratitude for charity is removed, it turns a respectful and humble human into an arrogant and grasping animal.
Well said.
