Paul Krugman’s Suggestion to End the Economic Slump: Mobilize for a Space Alien Attack

By Doug Powers  •  August 15, 2011 11:25 AM

**Written by Doug Powers

Yesterday, Paul Krugman, Nobel laureate and columnist for the New York Times, appeared on CNN’s “Fareed Zakaria GPS” and had an out of this world idea to turn the economy around:

PAUL KRUGMAN, NEW YORK TIMES: Think about World War II, right? That was actually negative social product spending, and yet it brought us out.

I mean, probably because you want to put these things together, if we say, “Look, we could use some inflation.” Ken and I are both saying that, which is, of course, anathema to a lot of people in Washington but is, in fact, what the basic logic says.

It’s very hard to get inflation in a depressed economy. But if you had a program of government spending plus an expansionary policy by the Fed, you could get that. So, if you think about using all of these things together, you could accomplish, you know, a great deal.

If we discovered that, you know, space aliens were planning to attack and we needed a massive buildup to counter the space alien threat and really inflation and budget deficits took secondary place to that, this slump would be over in 18 months. And then if we discovered, oops, we made a mistake, there aren’t any aliens, we’d be better

Oddly enough, after this interview was over, space aliens did show up, but it was only to cancel their subscription to the New York Times. Unfortunately though, the aliens were exposed to our Krugmanized economic atmosphere for too long, which resulted in three of them getting laid off before they could make it back to the spaceship.

Noel Sheppard at Newsbusters ran some of the numbers on the off chance anybody outside select pockets of liberal academia took Krugman seriously:

“Let’s be blunt. If the recipe for economic recovery is putting tens of millions of people in defense plants or military marches, then having them make or drop bombs on our enemies overseas, the value of world peace is called into question. In truth, building tanks and feeding soldiers—necessary as it was to winning the war—became a crushing financial burden. We merely traded debt for unemployment. The expense of funding World War II hiked the national debt from $49 billion in 1941 to almost $260 billion in 1945. In other words, the war had only postponed the issue of recovery.”

It is now well understood that the minimal interference of the government during the time from our founding to the New Deal is what enabled the incredible growth of the United States. We’ve even seen that cutting government works here. After Calvin Coolidge sharply cut taxes, the roaring 20’s occurred ( http://www.cato.org/pub_display.php?pub_id=3015 ). The Heritage Foundation’s Index of economic freedom ( http://www.heritage.org/index/ ) shows this quite clearly.

If you want to restore prosperity, it would be wise to see what has historically worked and what is working, around the world, now. This administration is repeating the policies of the 30s and wondering why the results they’re getting are pretty much the same. The insanity of spending ourselves into national bankruptcy is one reason for my sig:

The Army knows how to safeguard rifles. And troops in combat in mainly open areas like Iraq and Afghanistan complain that M16′s have too short a range to reach the enemy in some long range engagements. The M14′s were paid for and should have been saved for future use.

I could see that in Afghanistan, but in Iraq the close combat is what you deal with most of the time. As a matter of fact we were very happy to have our M4 of the M16 as the collapsable stock made it really great in tight quarters. The combat mostly occured in the city areas as the insurgents had more places to hide. The other thing about the M4 we loved was the weighted barrel. This helped to compensate for the recoil in 3 round burst.

Great case in point. The entire platoon needn’t shoulder one either, but I can see when your targets begin taking shape at the horizon ( vice bayonet range? ) that could prove life saving.

This is in practice, only instead of the M14 most fire teams have the M240B in them.

The maximum effective range of the M240B is 1800 Meters (6 times that of an M16) The M14 had a maximum effective range of 500 meters I beleive. The M14 is still in use today as a sniper rifle by the Marines (and led to the Army’s M21 sniper rifle). Here is more info on the M14 and its variations for anyone interested.
