What happened when Katy Perry tweeted “Pray for Israel”
Katy Perry is a pop singer/songwriter who churns out annoying Billboard hits (“Firework,” “Teenage Dream,” “Hot N Cold”) that your tween-age kids love and you love to hate (yes, I speak from experience). She made news this week after tying Michael Jackson’s record of scoring 5 #1 Billboard hits off a single album.
She also made some little-noticed waves on Twitter that should be newsworthy.
In a response to a fan of hers on Monday, she tweeted:
Over the past 24 hours, all hell has broken loose — with Palestinian, Muslim, and progressive Twitter followers lashing out at Perry for her innocuous tweet asking others to pray for Israel. Here’s a small sample:
Many of her fans in Israel praised her for taking a stand. But alas, their praise was premature.
Late on Monday night, you see, Perry backed off. Pray for Israel? Neeevvver mind:
Not that she’ll be able to appease the unappeasable.

It just seems like you always get the response, “Well, I’m all for Israel’s right to defend itself BUUUUUT…” and then comes a test of legitimacy for reprisal or action that is so divorced from reality that nobody can perfectly meet it and then Israel is condemned on that basis. The critic can then sit back and say, “Hey, like I said, I’m all for legitimate reactions by Israel but when they…” and then comes the list of basically everything they did.
It’s a great trap: Say you’re all for the ideal and then slam the people who are trapped in the reality because it never, ever matches your ideal.
Only you made my comment a ‘few bad apples’. Some is more than a few and less than all.
I’ve never defended the murderous actions of the Palestinians. Nor can I know what it’s like to live in Palestine or realize the whole story on why they vote for Hamas. I don’t know what lies/propaganda they presented to the people there. I can tell you that I do not advocate or support Hamas. Clear enough?
This is a story only on the blogs of Perez Hilton and such. It’s bad enough to say, ‘Hey look at this hollywood/singer..I can’t believe they think this.”
But this post is largely about twitter fans of a talentless, brainless woman with large assets. Very meaningful for MM to bring this to our attention!

I could have been nastier than the brat thing. Apparently you don’t know the historical facts either, as you prefer to dwell on the current disputes. Israel is in a no win situation. No matter what they do they will be vilified, so they might as well do what they want to stay safe.
Kent, how does any country facilitate any kind of lasting border agreement with Palestine (even when you can get Israel to agree)?

I thought the post was largely about how a single positive mention of Israel can turn a crowd of slavish fans into intolerant, anti-semitic, homophobic jerks? The fact that she’s a talentless, flavor-of-the-month is precisely the point: why should they care so much? It’s not about her, per se, it’s about pervasive hatred of Israel.

I’m not seeing where MM said “THE WORLD IS ENDING.” She just noted the rabid response of a crowd wrt to Israel. To MM, apparently, the fact that suggesting a prayer for the peace of Israel (instead of the usual demand for a piece of Israel) would cause a firestorm against otherwise mindnumbed clowns is noteworthy. Why is that such a problem?

It’s called Islam and the book they hand out is called the Koran. There are also assorted writings by Islamic scholars called the Hadith as well as fatwas and other religious pronouncements that describe Jews as pigs and monkeys that need to be annihilated. Check it out. You will get a better understanding of the conflict there.

I get crisis overload waaay too much these days. BUT, IMO for so long conservatives allowed insults to our religion, our love of country and our values to name a few. Perry is trying to be the next Madonna and she is topping the charts. Madonna was threatened for supporting Israel but she did not back down. During WWII, actress Greta Garbo identified ” high-level Nazi sympathizers in Stockholm and by providing introductions and carrying messages for British agents.” On and on. “Stars” become targets. Jihadists do not care what you type in your basement, but they do care about the David Lettermans of the world on a stage. Get over yourself and the mirror you love so much!

Actually, I like “Firework”. I found it inspirational. Unfortunately, the associated music video was a load of narcissistic hedonism. (would have been much better had they shown clips of construction workers building skyscrapers, scientists doing research, that sort of thing).
If these people supporting the palestinians are sincere, they should get on their knees and pray every day that I cannot be supreme dictator of Israel. There wouldn’t be a “Palestinian issue”. My cure for that disease would probably be harsher than my cure for illegal alien invaders in the U.S.
I’d declare the entire area part of Israel, send the military in and clean house. No self-rule for Palestinians. Draconian laws for a generation or two until they learn to be civilized, and any form of sharia teaching or expression outlawed upon pain of radical circumcision.

Oh-my-goodness! How can this be? So many Tweetgeeks of Arab descent, blathering on about killing the poor Palestinian children…why don’t they tell us how they really feel?
First of all, I have no sympathy for Palestinian children who get killed by Israeli forces. One might deem Israeli actions as “preemptive“. Secondly, I thought Islam celebrated “martyrdom?” The only differences I can see, are that Israeli strikes are in reaction to offensive strikes by Islamists. If the children were not killed in the retributive attacks by Israel, they stand a great chance at becoming Islam’s “beloved” suicide murderers in the future…with mass celebrations by their families for “honoring Allah,” and their family name.
There would be no retribution if the hate-drilled Palestinians stopped trying to kill Jews. In fact, I believe many of the “caged” issues would be resolved if these people gave up their Jihadi aspirations of martyrdom.
Lastly, I thought Islam didn’t want their accolytes listening to demonic Western music of corruption? It appears the Tweeter-heads are most likely Islamic, since they are so pro-Palestine, so it begs two questions:
1) Why are they listening to condemned music; and,
2)if Islam is the religion of peace, what’s with the condemnations they are sending Perry?

Kentroyal5: Do your homework…start with the Old Testament, then the historical accounts of Islam, then the history of Israel (before and after 1948). The so-called Palestinians aren’t Palestinians at all. They are a people being used by Arab Islamists and that is a very sad part of their history. Why doesn’t Chad, Sudan, and other Arab nations take them and allow them to establish a sovereign nation inside their borders and call that Palestine? This is nothing more than the attempt by Islamists to take Jerusalem.

You said this twice now and your specific wording is interesting.
You make it sound like Israel can only defend itself if someone attacks them directly and their response must be measured and targeted.
This makes me think of a bully that punches me in the stomach every day and the teacher says I can only punch him in the stomach in retaliation. I can’t hit him in the face nor can I cut his hand off or even burn his house down to stop his behavior.
In the end, he doesn’t mind me punching him back so he continues to bully me. He enjoys punching me and I don’t enjoy punching him. That doesn’t sound quite fair to me.
Fair to me would be for him to stop doing anything to me. So I give him advance warning that if he punches me tomorrow, I will shoot him in the leg with my gun.
Then the police, who did nothing when I complained about being punched everyday, now punish me for fighting back? The bully will be emboldened and may even escalate his attacks.

I don’t quite “get” twitter, I’m sure, but I follow Ms Malkin, and Doug, and some of the folks at Fox, and that usually keeps me alerted to breaking news (like the earthquake… first I heard about it came from Ms Malkin via twitter. Oh, and Joey Vento’s death, for another example)
