The real endangered species?
I’ve seen a lot of enviro-nitwittery over the years, but this takes the cake.
US Fish and Wildlife officials have raided the famous Gibson Guitars. And the instrument-maker isn’t alone. Antique piano dealers are also in the crosshairs. Why? Because rare, beautiful instruments made of ecologically incorrect materials must be sacrificed at the green altar. Talk about hitting a sour note.
Eric Felten at the WSJ reports:
Federal agents swooped in on Gibson Guitar Wednesday, raiding factories and offices in Memphis and Nashville, seizing several pallets of wood, electronic files and guitars. The Feds are keeping mum, but in a statement yesterday Gibson’s chairman and CEO, Henry Juszkiewicz, defended his company’s manufacturing policies, accusing the Justice Department of bullying the company. “The wood the government seized Wednesday is from a Forest Stewardship Council certified supplier,” he said, suggesting the Feds are using the aggressive enforcement of overly broad laws to make the company cry uncle.
It isn’t the first time that agents of the Fish and Wildlife Service have come knocking at the storied maker of such iconic instruments as the Les Paul electric guitar, the J-160E acoustic-electric John Lennon played, and essential jazz-boxes such as Charlie Christian’s ES-150. In 2009 the Feds seized several guitars and pallets of wood from a Gibson factory, and both sides have been wrangling over the goods in a case with the delightful name “United States of America v. Ebony Wood in Various Forms.”
The question in the first raid seemed to be whether Gibson had been buying illegally harvested hardwoods from protected forests, such as the Madagascar ebony that makes for such lovely fretboards. And if Gibson did knowingly import illegally harvested ebony from Madagascar, that wouldn’t be a negligible offense. Peter Lowry, ebony and rosewood expert at the Missouri Botanical Garden, calls the Madagascar wood trade the “equivalent of Africa’s blood diamonds.” But with the new raid, the government seems to be questioning whether some wood sourced from India met every regulatory jot and tittle.
Where are the waiver-dispensers when you need them? How about some relief for these American employers and small businessmen, President Obama?

As the ObamaFail blog explains:
The core issue is Gibson’s purchase of wood for use in guitar fingerboards. The wood is not raw, nor is it finished. Juszkiewicz explains that the wood is purchased from Madagascar when it is “two-thirds of the way” finished. Once purchased, the wood is brought to America, where it is finished by American workers. According to the Obama administration, purchasing unfinished wood is a violation of Madagascarian law…
But as Juszkiewicz said:
“So the government’s contention is that because American workers are working on that and finishing it, that it is not a finished product and, therefore, initially Madagascar law – and now I guess they’re contending Indian law – says you can’t remove unfinished product from the market. So in other words, if a person in Madagascar had completed the work on that blank, it would be legal. But the fact that American workers are finishing the work in the United States, makes it illegal, as far as their concerned.”
“The government’s position is, that is the law of the land in Madagascar and they are saying that is the law of the land in India. That is not the case. The fact is, we have affidavits from numerous government officials – and this court case, specifically now, is forMadagascar wood. We have affidavits from virtually every govt official saying that it is legal, that their definition of what is legal is a fingerboard blank and its been exported within every certification that is necessary. So they have the arrogance to interpret Madagascar law differently than the people of Madagascar.”
So the jackboots in the Obama administration are wrongly enforcing other countries’ laws and preventing American workers from doing their work here.
Typical DOJ: Ignore American laws. Foolishly enforce foreign ones at American companies’ expense.

I’m so glad they’re not going after mandolins too. I have an old “The Gibson” mandolin circa 1924 or something, with ivory tuning knobs. No idea what kind of wood, but I’m sure some of it must be racist. Or colonialist. Or some other kind of incorrect “ist.”

Say, I’m certain something can be worked out between American employers, small businessmen and the Pretender in Chief. Their concerns can be worked out easily with him. Well, some people I knew, back when, that played Gibsons, were certainly into wildlife, or wild living, or something.

That said, a commenter on Gateway Pundit did an OpenSecret.com search on the Gibson CEO’s political contributions. He’s given to both parties but the GP commenter noted that one of the recipients was Rep. Darrell Issa. You know, the guy who’s putting the heat on “My People” Holder. Hmm…
The next Conservative candidate MUST talk specifics about the run-away laws and regulations. They need to bring out the absolutely ridiculous lengths the thugs are going to so they can put their boots on our necks! The American People need to hear this…over and over until they understand what we are dealing with here. If they don’t, the “jack-booted thugs” will win and we will be cowering in our homes without our weapons and they will come in at will and confiscate anything they want. That will be the end.

Meanwhile, while they weren’t paying attention… The Emerald Ash Borer continues to devastate millions of valuable Ash Trees in the upper midwest. Since they are the “Fish and Wildlife Service” shouldn’t they worry more about what exotic critters are doing to our own native forests here at home?
Ironically, Ash wood is used for/to, among other things: furniture, bows, baseball bats, and oh yeah, electric guitar bodies (well, historically — not so much anymore). In fact, Fender used to rely upon nearly exclusively upon a supply of good sized/quality Ash slabs to make the famed Stratocaster and Telecaster (and other) models. Oh yeah, don’t tell the enviro-eco-nitwits, but I can say for certain, it makes pretty good firewood too (hehehe).
Any illegals who happened to be working there were given amnesty, but, those pallets of boards were arrested and deported.

This is why companies are moving out of the U.S. I expect to see Gibson go offshore soon, as this type of governmental harrassment is one of the driving forces of companies leaving. The design, the wood, and the name CAN’T be replaced, the artisans who shape the wood CAN.

I bet it is a beautiful state today and I would visit it…if you can promise that the stench of manbearpig has been erradicated.

That’s something I’ve really been trying to figure out since Clinton. What is it about Progressives? Sorry about that… sometimes the chemo causes me to want to vent, and I dump diplomacy. I could have said that nicer. It might be OT, but I don’t know, maybe Stinky wouldn’t push The Destruction so hard if he had a pleasant person to come home to? I thought it was the trees being cut down but after readiing MM’s update, it is actually because Madagascar law forbids the selling of unfinished wood. Gibson buys wood that is 2/3s finished so Obama is trying to enforce Madagascar law which that country even says is not the intent of the law.
Obviously, the intent is so the finishing is done in Madagascar using their own labor. Its an economic protection scheme, not an environmental one. That makes Obamas blundering all the more ridiculous and more suspect that its based on something else like union labor or political targeting.
He and the DOJ should not upset the music industry.

What’s the big deal here? The guitar is made from wood. PLANT MORE TREES. Problem solved.
I think I’m going to chop down a nice big redwood, throw out 99.9% of the wood (help yourselves to some) and build myself a four-string bass. If the Fish and Wildlife folks have a problem, they can bring it up with my assistants, Smith and Wesson.

The foresters I have worked with ALL agree that the environment is best preserved when LOCALS have control because they ulimately have the most to lose or gain by it.
In other words, it’s called PRIVATE PROPERTY and the FREE MARKET!

I’m an environmental scientist, and a multitude of people involved in the wood industry use what are called forest-certified products. Sometimes, though, you have to request them because they are not always in demand, no thanks to the hypocritical eco-zealots who make my job harder.

I think a lot of hippie rock and rollers are turned off by a lot of what Obama has done. I’m sure a few hardcore people will still vote for the bamster once the GOP nominee is picked, but you’re really talking about a group of people that aren’t interested in politics lest they are drafted into a war.
The enthusiam gap between people who don’t like Obama’s policies and people who do is significant.

Well, we can’t blame Obama’s guys…they can’t bother with securing the border and killing drug smugglers…they have jobs to kill!
