GOP Debate Wednesday Night Open Thread
**Written by Doug Powers
Newt Gingrich, Ron Paul, Michele Bachmann, Herman Cain, Jon Huntsman, Rick Perry, Rick Santorum and Mitt Romney will tee it up at 8 p.m. ET at the Reagan Presidential Library. The debate is on MSNBC or you can watch it online here.
If you can’t watch the debate but want to know who had the best performance, tomorrow morning check to see which Republican candidate’s rising numbers have NBC pollsters concerned.
I’ll pop in later if anything of note happens while I’m watching. Thank goodness Packers/Saints game isn’t until tomorrow. Whew!
Feel free to comment on the goings-on at the Reagan Library!

Fore! more years. Run Sarah Run.
I think I’ll wash my hair tonight. If I have time, I’ll comb it too.
yep, why watch, sarah isn’t there, or christy. sarah is my “guy”, but some think christy will jump in too.
MSNBC and Brian Williams. Egad. This could serve as a good time for the prebuttal to Obamas jobs plan. If they know what Obama will say tomorrow, and they probably do, they can upstage him by stealing his thunder, thus rendering his “famous” speech moot before it even begins.
Why does Romney have a 59 point plan on jobs? Even God only needed 10 points to show mankind what to do. Or did Moses break a few tablets on the way down the mountain?
I think a 3 point plan would be sufficient.
1. Lower taxes
2. Reduce spending
3. Replace Barack and Harry
About That Fox News Poll
There have been many pundits, news writers, and bloggers recently who have cited a specific Fox News poll while giving us the “reasons” that they think Governor Palin should stay out of the 2012 presidential race. Considering that the poll has a Fox News label on it, we as conservatives are supposed to believe that it is entirely credible. There are some problems with that, and “credible” isn’t a word I would use in association with the numbers they came up with. Here’s why… http://conservatives4palin.com/2011/09/about-that…
This poll is for strippers….you know the rest.
Believe none of what you hear, and only half of what you see.
Peteee, are you joking? Christie? Check out the dude’s record! He’s virtually a fiscal democrat!
Oh ya a GOP debate modwerated by NBC. Who in their right mind would watch it?
Question #1: Do you still beat your spouse?
Question #2: How difficult is it for you to be a Tea Party extremist racist hate monger?
I’ll pass.
Question #3 You are a hypocrite candidate who says one thing and does another so you can’t criticise my guy for doing the same thing. Uh, was that in the form of a question?
Uh Who is Rick Perry? There, thats better. Beep. Your 10 seconds are up.
WHY do they keep giving Huntsman a chance to speak? WHY am I still watching this drivel?
I want Cain / Bachman!!
And could someone put Ron Paul back in his cage? He confuses me!
i do know he is not perfect, and he is definately not conservative, but he is a pit bull. so far i am not impressed by anybody tonight. perry’s answer to the poverty question, what a joke. one person’s wealth is 20 times more than another. in a capitalist system what difference does this make? those who work hadr get more wealth. there is no guarantee for wealth here in the usa.
Why would the Reagan Library ever allow a leftist operation like NBC to moderate anything there, I just don’t see it. Are they blind to what NBC is?
Now that is funny I don’t care who you are!
Can’t handle Brian Williams, 5 minutes of him and NBC is tooooo much for me, I’m out of there.
Thank goodness for NCIS reruns.
Newt lays another one across the chops of the MSM
I’m not saying I’m voting for him, but I would love to watch Gingrich debate Obama. He would wipe the floor with him.
Wish he never sat on that bench with Pelosi.
Ron Paul says that the border fence could be used to keep us (and our capital) in.
Oh oh
underdog
I am so tired of political debates and politics in general. I am going to read my book and go to bed.
OK Loyalist – Thanks for that link. Newt really DID let them have it. Idiot liberals.
RE: #5 sorry, wrong link….started my drinking game for the debate too soon.

Good night, happy.
UNBELIEVABLE! I went to the live link for 30 seconds and I heard some idiot liberal scum reporter ask HUNTMANS who among the other panelists he thought made crazy, inane comments.
MSNBC??? Are you kidding me? WHY would Reublicans let MSNBC moderate this debate??? What kind of question is THAT???
Clearly NBC News is pushing question after question to promote Huntsman in this debate.
Absurd.
Meanwhile, too bad Perry has not yet seen the report from the Nature Journal of Science regarding the fraud that climat change is.
The key to a right win is to peel off the Reagan democrats (what damn few are left) and the independents. Sadly the path to that is getting face time on the MSM. Reason why Newt’s chop bust was so damn effective. Not arguing with you… just trying to ease shared pain.
did you hear the cheers for the excecutions in texas? i think nbc is in shock over that. the idea that if you kill somebody, you get excecuted. ron white always said texas is installing a fast lane for excecutions.
It’s tells what torment their souls are in. They are all for killing innocent life with abortions, but will die defending guilty life.
I didn’t keep an actual tally.
But probably:
# of questions:
15 Perry
15 Romney
8 Bachmann
7 Cain
7 Paul
& who cares about the rest?
4. Truly enforce current immigration laws and secure the border. That’ll free up a bunch of jobs for legal out-of-work Americans especially in the construction/services industries.
I’m sorry.
Newt looked good w/ his 7 or so questions.
Too bad that he is such a RINO!!
Remember the audience. This debate is in California. We have had the most people on death row for decades. the court system here is soo screwed up that they cannot enforce the laws anymore. The clapping was in appreciation of a legal system that actually works!
lucky i can not see it, just read about it with this fine group of people. will not be able to listen or see the president either. having a vacation in japan at this time is great
That RINO delivered a blow to that MSM telling them that every candidate is standing in unity against you water carriers trying to get Obumlears re-elected. IMO, Let him roar.
In prior post … you = MSM
I watched the first hour of the debate and could feel my blood pressure rising as the MSNBC moderators (Hah, that’s a contradiction in terms!), kept throwing out one biased question after another. As Gingrich pointed out, they were trying to pit each candidate against the others. It seemed to me that Perry and Romney were getting the most face time that first hour with Cain, Santorum and Paul getting fewer questions. I can’t say how the whole debate went because I got disgusted and switched it off, but I believe NBC was trying hard to influence who gets the nomination.
Looked and sounded like a Tea Party convention… Great job and don’t listen the the media.
Cain, Bachmann, Romney, Perry, no particular order, yet.
*Watched the entire debate; Moderators went juvenile as expected, trying to instigate a schoolyard fight; Big issues out there, but little time spent on same; Worst part was bringing out advocacy pimp for illegal alien amnesty to ask questions to see if any takers on making the USA a third world country like Mexico; Newt, Perry, and Huntsman bit.
Overview:
Santorum: Fading fast.
Newt: Most enlightening answers.
Bachmann: Best response was related to disasterous effects of Obamacare.
Romney: Took it to P-BO the most, but still can’t defend Romneycare.
Perry: A riddle wrapped within an enigma.
Paul: Right on so many issues, but so wrong as the messenger.
Cain: Thoughful answers throughout, but just a dark shadow that speaks to those two moderators.
Huntsman: Was in full manchurian for this debate.
**Will continue to send coin to Bachmann and Cain; Cannot support any of the others at this point in time.
Good assessment IMO. Newt’s chop bust to MSLSD was priceless. Almost worth sending him a Fin just to keep that coming.
I have an amnesty program I think I can live with.
Any illegal alien who can prove he was in the country prior to Sept 7 2011, can remain in the country, provided he pays, in cash, in advance, $1,000,000.
14 million illegals x 1 million dollars = debt paid off.
Even if they’ve committed a crime in this country, they can stay. In that event, we’ll even provide the housing…
Ron Paul and certainly Huntsman have taken themselves out of the race tonight, IMO.
My favorite is still, for now, Michele Bachmann, but she better come up with a better answer for dealing with illegals.
OK_L #36,
Yep, “almost” !
I still liked them all. Huntsman was the least likable but he had few questions and was fighting a sinus infection or something. The Gingrich slap was awesome. He gets one of those in every time.
Big thing now will be Ponzi scheme. Perry didn’t say he would abolish social security. He said he would change it. Somehow, I think he is right. It is a Ponzi scheme that is unsustainable. I have been paying for years, lots of money. How much will I get back, pass to my heirs, or utilize the way I would like to? It is currently fiscally insolvent. Change is needed.
So I wonder which Obama will choose, Idiot or liar about the border?
Ron Paul is seemingly coming apart. Cut off the air conditioning to our troops and then they will come home? That was insulting to our troops. Hey, feed them pig slop and maybe they will come home sooner.
Cain sounded good but the focus was Perry and Romney. The moderators don’t make it fair. They make it for entertaiment and/or political bias.
The ideas did get out there. The discussion is there. Obama is running scared.
*Cain still has the best answer in that regard; You can tell he is not a politician, because he doesn’t give weasel answers, just clear, concise responses.
Guess what? The Republican nominee for the presidency of the US was up there on that stage tonight.
And it’s probably going to be Mitt Romney.
Not happy? Neither am I, as I think that Romney is a grownup who will not be brought down by crazy right-wing opinions early in the race, and just might appeal to the centrists, the independents, who will decide this race.
I would prefer that someone like Bachmann or Perry become the nominee as Obama would win it in a walk.
Hiraghm–lol over your solution to illegals!
Another good assessment IMO. Perry backed up his conviction to calling it a Ponzi scheme. Loved his remark of maybe it’s time we have many uncomfortable discussions.
Very nice.
Both Perry or Bachmann will eat your pinko commie jugears for lunch. No one likes a leech.
Is that Ilovemyhairybailey?
*Thanks and thanks; I’m no big fan of politics or politicians, but I love the country enough to size up the candidates that are out there to see who best to replace the one in the White House who is purposely trying to destroy it.
*Remember too, it is just as important that we flip the Senate with some more Jim DeMint conservatives!
When will we have a debate moderated by Rush Limbaugh and Michelle Malkin?
PLEASE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Paging Rogue Cheddar
Paging Rogue Cheddar
Paging Rogue Cheddar!!
What are the “crazy right wing” opinions that you refer to.
And why do you thiink they merit being called “crazy?”
I wasn’t all that impressed by any of them. They had to know what basic questions they would get, yet didn’t really have great, quick answers. Anyone who keeps up with a number of conservative blogs could have answered better.
Cain had good answers, my 18-year-old son really liked him. I do too, but I don’t want another newbie in the White House. Do a stint as gov first, then we’ll talk.
Some of Ron Paul’s answers devolved into gibberish. Eliminate air-conditioning for our troops in the mid-East and use it for welfare programs – what? Eliminating mandates also seems to be his answer to everything.
Romney is just too much of a fence-sitter. Have some convictions and stick with them.
Bachmann sounded good, but I want someone with experience, not just talking points. It also would have been nice if she had just answered the question. She was asked what she would do with 11+ million illegals after the border is secure and immigration refactored but never answered and she was asked twice. What would she do? Arrest them and send them home? Give them amnesty? Hope that with no jobs they would just leave? What?
Santorum and Huntsman, who cares?
Perry’s straight talk was good, but he needed to follow up ‘Ponzi Scheme’ with an example of how to fix things. He has several in his own state, cities that got out of SS and did their own, 401K-type of pensions with much better returns. Just repeating ‘Ponzi Scheme’ and ‘lies’ doesn’t solve the problem. He is NOT a smooth talker in a debate, I kept wanting to talk for him.
At this point, I would have to go with Perry. I’m not fond of the social conservative side of him, but he has generally the right positions and far more actual experience than anyone else.
I sure wish they had invited Gary Johnson to debate. He’s a proven fiscal conservative with 8 years as NM’s governor under his belt, plus starting the most successful construction business in the state. If Santorum, Cain, and Huntsman were there, we should have heard from him too. It would have been nice to have the libertarian viewpoint without the Ron Paul craziness. I’m tired of people who say they want limited government, except when it comes to social issues. Hypocrites all.
After watching just a few minutes of the nbc debate wrap-up (~4 minutes) one thing was clear.
They all think Perry won and their only prayer is to lie about him.
The first big lie is that Perry wants to abolish social security. That is a total lie as he has not said that and did not say it in this debate. What NBC does not understand is that social security has been called a ponzi scheme from the first day it was enacted. This is not a unique, or even controversial, statement.
Another good assessment, surprised no mention of Newt’s slap down though.
If they think Perry won, then run away!
I saw them working Cain over. He was combative. They sneered him at the end anyway.
This is a blatant example of it’s the MSM that tries defining the GOP not the GOP itself. Only didlos try proving differently. Or is that dildi ?
This is why I can’t run for office…I have an eleven point plan. When I present it, I tick off each point on a finger. When the last point is made, there are no fingers left, so I reach for the zipper.
Just can’t win that mass appeal…
Does this mean, you know how a one armed man counts change ?
And they call my dog a pointer…Hah!
Nope, I don’t trust Perry. I got a bad feeling about him. He makes me think of a Chicago politician.
Huntsman’s a bigger nut than Paul. I wouldn’t buy a car from that guy. And some of his positions, if I were President, I’d have him hauled up on charges of treason. He belongs in a Democrat debate as the token right-wing extremist (aka moderate Democrat).
Romney had the best answer for the illegal alien question; it wasn’t perfect by a long shot, but it was the most acceptable of the dribble the rest doled out. I think having that piece of garbage from Telemundo ask the questions was a kind of “gotcha”, to try to make the candidates either look racist or back down.
(how do I know he’s a piece of garbage? They said he was with Telemundo… duh…)
I would like to thank everyone here for your insight and comments confirming that I made the correct decision tonight by skipping the MSNBC desecration of the Reagan Library and instead watched my D’Backs continue on the path to the playoffs and hopefully another World Series …
I saw the gang rape of Cain by the looneys of MSNBC after the debate, and I can’t wait for the day Herman tells that fat moron Sgt Schultz “excuse me idiot, but aren’t you the (_*_) running that commercial about why are all these companies leaving and leaving behind unemployed high school dropout morons who want to tell the owners of the companies what to do with their money. We have tried your communism crap for 50 years now, and we are broke, we have 1/7th of our people out of work, we have trillions in unfunded mandates and no way to pay them, and you want to continue with the race card/rich-poor BS. We rich business owners will just let you morons destroy all the social safety net systems.”
