This Week’s ‘Albert Gore Jr. Award for Eco-Hypocrisy’ Goes To…

By Doug Powers  •  September 19, 2011 10:16 PM

…Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick:

“You got me!” grinned the Governor.

He’s talking about video shot by WBZ of Mr. Patrick leaving his Milton home this morning with his assigned state trooper at the wheel for the routine drive into work in his SUV.

One problem.

The Governor himself recently declared this “Car-Free Week,” urging people to ditch their autos in favor of public transportation, biking, walking, or at the very least carpooling — espousing the environmental and health benefits of that switch.
[...]
The Red Line, by the way, is within walking distance of his house — one of three “T” stations within a half mile of home.

And I don’t want to hear any “he should be excused from his own initiative because he’s an important person.” Joe Biden has often taken public transportation, and he’d be the first to tell you that from time to time he’s spotted important people on the DC to Wilmington Amtrak.

By the way, World Car Free Day is Thursday, which probably means that Al Gore will embrace the spirit of the occasion by completely avoiding use of his cars and only getting from place to place in his jet. Team player, the Goracle.

Yes. You know, as a kid when I read Animal Farm, there was so much that I didn’t really understand. It’s much clearer now that it’s being acted out for all to see.

Why don’t they just be honest and call it,

“Car-Free, When They Can, Which Means, For People Who Have An Over-Inflated Sense of Importance…Never…But They Still Reserve the Right To Leave Their Commitment To The Cause Open Ended, So That They Can Feel Good In The Hope That Others Might Actually Believe That They Are Doing The Right Thing, Even When They Aren’t Week. ”

Maybe the printing costs would be a little over budget.

Sounds a lot like how marriage vows (especially in Hollywood) ought to be written, these days.

If I genuinely thought a technology was bad/harmful, I would strive to stop using it. That would show others it could be done, and convince a lot more people to try it than these “Let’s sit in the dark for an hour like North Korea” initiatives.

It’s all an absurdity, anyway. How can unions continue to support a party that’s platform includes the notion that “cars are bad!”? Are they gonna be happy riding to work on car-free roads on buses made in Canada?

This reminds me of the Seattle Mayor who claims he rides his bike to work everyday. The only problem is that his security detail loads the bike onto the SUV, drives him from his home to about a block away from the office and then he rides the rest the way on his bike.

Great. I think this week I won’t use the economy car I use for commuting (Honda del sol @ 34 mpg) and use my 4.0 liter Jeep Wrangler (16 mpg on a good day) since it’s not really a car but more of a big metal box with wheels. Will that get me any points with the lib/progs?

Excellent point. Unless you’re into the dark and sitting in a circle listening to co-workers gasp for air, the Left’s whole premise is silly.

I’d love to see some video of Seattle’s bike-commuting mayor. Probably not the only one pulling that little stunt. And why does the mayor of a ‘mellow’ west coast town need a security detail?

Probably all those violent Tea Partiers huh?

If I lived and worked in a major city like Boston I would take the T daily. It is much easier than driving if it goes where you need to be.

For people that don’t live in a major city, a car is the only sensible way to get around. Sure I could walk or ride a bike to the supermarket, pharmacy, etc. and back. However that is totally impractical and would take all day to accomplish what could be done in a few hours with a car. I’ll stick to my car.
