Government Saving the Ozone Layer One Asthma Inhaler at a Time

On any given day I’d bet the amount of greenhouse gases Al Gore singlehandedly spews into the atmosphere more than trumps the chlorofluorocarbon footprint of all the epinephrine asthma inhalers in the U.S. combined. That said, since we’ve apparently solved all other major problems, it’s time to save the world from the grave environmental threat of… Primatene Mist:
Asthma patients who rely on over-the-counter inhalers will need to switch to prescription-only alternatives as part of the federal government’s latest attempt to protect the Earth’s atmosphere.
The Food and Drug Administration said Thursday patients who use the epinephrine inhalers to treat mild asthma will need to switch by Dec. 31 to other types that do not contain chlorofluorocarbons, an aerosol substance once found in a variety of spray products.
The action is part of an agreement signed by the U.S. and other nations to stop using substances that deplete the ozone layer, a region in the atmosphere that helps block harmful ultraviolet rays from the Sun.
This FDA move is of course in conjunction with the EPA, so any time two government agencies are involved you certainly know it won’t lead to anything being less expensive:
But the switch to a greener inhaler will cost consumers more. Epinephrine inhalers are available via online retailers for around $20, whereas the alternatives, which contain the drug albuterol, range from $30 to $60.
The “green” movement joins hands with health care. What could possibly go wrong?
Let the inhaler hoarding begin — that is, unless your storage closet is already chock full of incandescent light bulbs.

These policies are going to end up killing people. It’s all fun and games until a few of those people decide to take a few bureaucrats with them.
Counting the Soviet Union, China and Vietnam among others, their policies have already killed tens, if not hundreds, of millions.
EPA: Oh stop your weezing and suck it up!
Maybe the inhalers should use helium to deliver the dosage.
So how long will it be till the health care boards decide that the new inhalers are too expensive under obamacare and decide that a pain pill would be cheaper?
Alternatively, they could report to the hospital emergency room for a breathalyzer.

I beter buy a couple more of them. My asthma symptoms aren’t what they used to be, but they still affect me sometimes.
This hits close to home. My husband, myself and one of our daughters has asthma. And I agree, it is time for some to start hoarding those inhalers…now. We are stocking up on the light bulbs. However, we already use prescription inhalers. The price of our inhalers went up DRASTICALLY about a year ago when they forced the drug companies to change the make-up of the inhaler to omit the chlorofluorocarbons from them. That meant the new inhalers were considered a new drug and therefore more expensive. That happens every time a drug changes its components, even a little bit. It goes on the market as a new drug.
Folks, this is getting so freakin serious, I am getting scared now. The EPA is one of the main reasons this country is failing. We HAVE to break their hold on this country! We may not have a dictator…yet. But the EPA is the equivalent of a dictator. They have the power to regulate every part of our lives and we can’t seem to do a thing about it. This is all wrong!! We can’t drill, we can’t mine for coal, we can’t allow farmers to get water because of a tiny fish, and now some people can’t get asthma inhalers. They are murdering us. Literally. If we get control in 2012, it would be great…but maybe too late. This crap has to stop NOW, not in 15 months!
Oh, and Al gore does continue to flaunt his wealth and his hypocricy. If we have to suffer, why is he exempt? I believe in Karma, and that man is going to pay some day. Count on it.

The last time they pulled the CFC nonsense was in the ’70′s when the eliminated CFC’s from spray paint cans & Freon from air conditioners.
It was a great way to generate income to the government by taxing the chemical, replacing it, making car mechanics “capture” Freon and disposing of it.
The scientists of the day heralded the move and provided measurements of the “hole in the ozone” had rapidly diminished, even though the ozone layer was later proven to be “cyclical.”
This was truly the beginning of the EPA’s stranglehold on American enterprise.
The amount of CFC’s in the inhalers HAS to be about 0.0001% of what they eliminated in the earlier crackdown.

Oh my God…I just read that link. It gave me chills, and it isn’t Halloween yet. This is so frightening, I can’t believe it has come to this in this country. These people bought land, started building, and now are shut down and subject to fines because they didn’t know their property (in the middle of a sub-division) was a wetland, yet a search of that information turns up NOTHING. If the new administraiton in 2012 does not shut down this agency, the Tea Party will. They have made a huge power grab and are exerting it against the citizens…that’s us, folks. The House needs to defund them and the Senate needs to get on board before they become another entrenched arm of the communist party currently in power. Oh wait, they already are. This just sickens me.

Whatever other issues may be in play here, why the hell is the FDA involved in this? Their SOLE concern should be with whether or not the product is medically sound. This mission creep needs to stop.

The EPA comments made me think of a video recently emailed to me called “Agenda Grinding America Down.” It mentions the EPA’s power, among other things being used to take the U.S. down from the inside. The video is just over 16 minutes and ends abruptly, but it is very concerning. I haven’t done anymore research to find a complete video. If I find something more complete, I’ll be sure to post it in a future comment.

With 13 months left until election, this POTUS has already stopped being POTUS (except to spend taxpayer’s money) and has turned practically full time into campaigner mode. He is rousing up his base, firing up the morons out there who will do his bidding. If he asks them to fight, you can bet your bippy they will fight, and I don’t mean with words. Obama is screaming, shouting slogans, acting exactly like a dictator in full charge mode. I get literally sick to my stomach when I see video of him out there talking that way to the American People. He is a horrible man and a horrible president and I am disgusted with those who allowed him to get into such a powerful position in this country!
I blame the media, the voters, the campaign contributors, the marketing geniuses who decided to make him a “god”, the unions, and the Congress that did not vet him AT ALL, and allowed a Kenyan citizen to become the leader of the free world. I blame Juan McCain who wouldn’t even let his campaign dig into Obama’s very secret past, or mention the name Jeremiah Wright, and who said that Obama would make a good president! Had a chat with a physician yesterday (the people that are always ignored by dc when it comes to medicine). Apparently, the non-cfc inhalers cause irritation and tend to make asthma sufferers choke and cough, which is obviously what you want in an asthma medicine. The insanity in DC is only barely topped by president Imadinnerplate in Iran.

I’m giving serious consideration to joining the Freonese Liberation Army. Just as soon as I can catch my breath.
My son-in-law’s a pharmacist, and he says taking the inhalers off the market is good regardless of the propellant they use. His beef is with the medicine, not the mechanism for spraying it.
Yet another example of how politics gets involved in far too many things.
For years I’ve been educating people about the clean diesel cars that are common in Europe but not practical here in the US. The current generation of diesel engines actually produces less pollutants than gasoline engines, yet performs better. But because politicians got involved a few decades ago, there are laws that drastically increase the cost to operate a diesel-powered vehicle. And, of course, there’s no repealing or canceling those laws.
The pattern has been repeated in dozens of other areas, and we can now add asthma inhalers to the list.
Strongly reminds me of when DDT was banned (in the US in 1972, and later in much of the rest of the world). See DDT on Wikipedia for a proud claim that this ban helped bring back the American Bald Eagle from near extinction. Now check out this link to see how many children have died since then from malaria.
I have heard it said that DDT was the single most important contribution to human health in the 20th century.
So how many kids will we let die in the 21st because we want to ban one of the few affordable meds for asthma?
And, believe me, pain pills don’t help.

Pardon the respiration, but Reagan helped put this into motion with his signing of the Montreal Protocol in 1988. Margaret Thatcher signed it, as well. The FDA ruled epinephrine inhalers as non-essential back in November, 2008.

It also doesn’t hurt to say the same thing in different ways. We all have our own way of expressing the same thing, and I for one enjoy all the variations on a “theme”. I know I do that myself. AND, at times, I post something I want to get down on “paper” before I have had time to read all the posts. Then I go back and read them. This happens to all of us occasionally.
You gotta wonder which of these kinds of events will finally be the straw that breaks the camel’s back and inspires the only-slightly-left of center Dems to join the R’s in stripping the fed hydra of its power to destroy the lives of American citizens. Is taking away inhalers from kids not enough?
Yeah, that’s the point. Less people breathing=less carbon emissions.
