To be clear; cops shouldn’t be the people interferring with the 1st amendment. If one of the Jobs’ family members does something illegal, they should be arrested by the police. But I would help pay for their defense fund.

Well. You’re wrong. They can protest the sun rising if they wanted. The government cannot restrict their speech.

Westboro has already won a Supreme Court case on their ‘right’ to protest military funerals.

My point is…this isn’t about whether they have the right to protest government or not, like commentor Freddy opined.

It’s that government can’t RESTRICT free speech. It’s not about whether said speech is directed at government or not.

Intentional infliction of emotional distress is a private civil matter. And it has nothing to do with the government not having the right to restrict the speech of the Westboro christians (religion of peace?)

The Westboro christians know their contitutional rights and city ordinances very well. They usually prevail in court.

Sorry. It’s going to take a lot more to convince me we have “free speech” than a bunch of phony christian lawyers getting to harass people at funerals.

I watched 20 years ago as the FCA was chased out of school and then completely off campus because of the morning prayers they engaged in. I wasn’t a member, and I don’t really agree with their premise, but there is no reasonable question that their right to free exercise of religion was infringed. Yes they were on school property, but once they had moved under the flagpole, they were harming no one, and in no one’s way. Furthermore they weren’t “establishing a state religion” by being there.

If Westboro cared anything about what they claim, they would be carrying out these protests at every lawless judge’s funeral who have been the real reason for the erosion of our rights, and the encroachment of immorality upon society.
