Obama to Donors: Get Me Re-Elected or Face the Horror of Self-Reliance

There are still a lot of people who believe that the notion of self reliance and limited government is a feature of America instead of a glitch, and they long to see a return to those founding principles. These are folks who understand that America didn’t declare independence because the King failed to provide the colonists with a health care plan (Georgecare), free lunches and a retirement fund. This is an optimistic breed who can see the inherent good in their fellow Americans and realize that a tempered centralized bureaucracy doesn’t automatically translate to individual misery and hardship in a land where faith and charity are the rule, not the exception. They also believe that “federally mandated compassion” has to a great degree turned out to be a cruel and expensive oxymoron.

President Obama was not talking to those people yesterday.

From ABC News via Dan Riehl:

At a million-dollar San Francisco fundraiser today, President Obama warned his recession-battered supporters that if he loses the 2012 election it could herald a new, painful era of self-reliance in America.

“The one thing that we absolutely know for sure is that if we don’t work even harder than we did in 2008, then we’re going to have a government that tells the American people, ‘you are on your own,’” Obama told a crowd of 200 donors over lunch at the W Hotel.

“If you get sick, you’re on your own. If you can’t afford college, you’re on your own. If you don’t like that some corporation is polluting your air or the air that your child breathes, then you’re on your own,” he said. “That’s not the America I believe in. It’s not the America you believe in.”

A possible Republican comeback would be to simply ask those who have been made to fear self-reliance how that reliance has been working out for them lately.

“Elect me or you’re on your own” is nothing new. It’s recycled from the 2008 campaign (“green administration” promise kept).

If you want to meet Michelle, you need to find out when she will be in your town and go see her!

I was hoping to run into her when we lived in Colorado Springs, but it never happened. :-(

Like many people who comment here, a lot of us used the G.I. Bill (and spent many a lousy deployment) to go to night school. And, yes, it took a LOT longer to gain an education than most realize.

It only took me 12 years to get my 4-year degree! I was able to do a lot of studying inflight, since I was a piece of emergency equipment (technician).

Sure I would, you’ll be wearing the red stilletos and smoking a cigarette.

    Huh.

I’d be wearing expensive heels for sure, because I’m very short, but smoking?–Even conservatives would be farting out eighteen golden kittens if a lit cigarette came near them.

Being self-reliant is the proper way to be, but we must remember that many, if not most, of the people we are calling ‘takers’ and lazy are nothing of the sort. They are conditioned to expect certain things by a system that WANTS them to react the way they do BY DESIGN!

The system has been set up to funnel people caught in its grasp towards certain behavior patterns whether they want to behave that way or not – and I am a prime example.

I went back to school late in life, and I worked overnight to provide for my family while putting myself through Clemson. I decided to push for the Master’s at USF in Tampa, with the goal of teaching at a community college. I transfered my job to Tampa.

I was in Tampa for about 5 months when the pressure finally got to me and I had a very, very minor heart attack. I was out of work 5 days. The company let me work through Christmas then fired me for missing those 5 days. This was at the time Obama started talking about Obamacare for the first time, and I made 3 dollars an hour more than everyone else.

I looked for work while continuing school and serving as a GTA. Only after being out of work for 3 months did I apply for unemployment.

I graduated this past May, and like a good citizen I told Unemployment so. They suspended my unemployment while the ‘investigated’ whether my being a full time student would interfere with me taking a full time job. When I told them I couldn’t pay my rent if they did that, I was told, AND I QUOTE – ‘Mr Bryant, there are homeless shelters.’

I have been out of work now for 21 months. I have a Master’s degree and 20 years of work experience, including management and HR work. And I and my family of 6 live in a campground in a borrowed camper eating food donated by two local churches.

Apparently you are not supposed to improve your life in Obama’s America. If you try, they use the system to funnel you back under their control. That seems to be the only reason this happened. Now I have to work that much harder to get out from behind the 8 ball I’ve been placed behind. This was done, I believe, to sabatage the work I had done to make my life better and less needing of government.

Most people would simply give up and accept this as part of life in Progressive America, accept welfare, section 8 housing and maybe disability – I did have a heart attack after all. That is what the system WANTS me to do. We don’t need to denegrate those whom take that option – they have been enslaved. We need to liberate them, not deride them. Not all of them are as stubborn as I am.

As a ST:TNG aficionado, I hope I can explain the contradiction. The Federation operates under the Vulcan IDIC (Infinite Diversity, Infinite Combinations) phylosophy. The Borg are the antithesis of IDIC. So, they’re the ultimate bad guys. BTW, it’s spelled Ferengi, the ultimate corporate raiders: dishonest and amoral.

Kipling spelled it “ferenghi”, iirc. He would know better than the dweebs who make TNG.

What the Ferengi are is a caricature of western capitalists. It is an entirely racist depiction. They are portrayed as sexist and cowardly, as well as money-grubbing.

The contradiction exists because leftists, such as those behind TNG, wish to promote socialism, but TNG would have been even more boring and would have gone off the air almost immediately had they stuck to their “socialism is the future” meme.

I wasn’t in Anatomy class–I was waiting for mrcakes, who was pre-med. And this was the ’80s. I was very Robert Palmer’s ‘Addicted to Love’ video that day.

I used to volunteer to give intercranial injections to lab mice when cute female students exhibited horror at the prospect. A virology lab that was very important to their grade… I pause with the syringe loaded with some noxious virus. “So, do you live on campus? No? What do you like to do on weekends? What is your favorite blouse?” At some point I would awaken, face down on the linoleum, snarfing in my own spittle. Another failure. I would need to amend my approach once again.

On a serious note… How much would the cost of a college education drop if we cut out the government cheese over say, 20 years? The same with healthcare.

The problem is right and common sense take a back seat to graft and corruption.

Second, whoever it was that said snarky things to you at the Dept. of Labor should be reported. With 20 years of experience, and the fact that you were terminated, not fired, you are eligible for your unemployment. This is not welfare; it is your earned benefit of working for all those years. I, too, spent a lot of time in HR and although I do not know all of the pertinent facts, you seem to be eligible for YOUR earned unemployment funds.

Probably significantly. As long as colleges know the money’s coming in from government guaranteed loans and grants they have absolutely no incentive to cut costs, the greedy organizations. They know as soon as they raise costs, government, in collusion, will step in and increase the funding available to soon to be indebted future college grads.

Obama is right to be concerned about how difficult it is going to be for him to get re-elected in 2012.

Since Obama did not allow local reporters inside his fundraising lunch, some reporters actually covered what was happening outside of his donor luncheon in San Francisco yesterday.

And it was not a pretty sight.

In a powerful display of profound disappointment with President Obama, some of the Democratic Party’s biggest donors gathered Tuesday – not inside his tony San Francisco fundraiser at the W Hotel, but outside on the sidewalks carrying signs in protest of his policies.

Protesting what, that he is not spending taxpayer money fast enough, or not “regulating” enough companies out of business? The only Liberals who gripe about Obama are the ones who say he is not far enough Left and that he doesn’t confiscate enough property. The “Democrats” in this country are anything but Democrats. They are like no Democrats my parents and grandparents ever were. These are full-on European-style Marxian Socialists wrapped in a liberal coat of Stalinism. All these fools will be voting for him come next November.
