Coming Soon: ‘Work Opportunity Summer’

Goodbye “Recovery Summer” — Hello “Work Opportunity Summer.”

Alternate headline for partisan pessimists: Obama administration to create 110,000 unpaid volunteer jobs:

President Obama on Thursday will unveil a summer-jobs initiative that the White House says is already on track to create 180,000 “work opportunities” in the private sector in 2012.

That is the number of opportunities, which includes mentoring and unpaid internships, that companies have told the administration they are willing to create. Some 70,000 jobs are paid, the White House says.

The initiative was hatched after Congress failed to approve a $1.5 billion summer-jobs fund that President Obama had been seeking as part of the American Jobs Act.

“Today’s announcement is the latest in a series of executive actions the Obama administration is taking to strengthen the economy and move the country forward because we can’t wait for Congress to act,” a White House statement reads.

On the executive actions menu, the size of this one might be classified as “medium.”

Sure, many of these “work opportunities” may be unpaid, but there’s a positive lesson to be had:

While many of these jobs will be unpaid training opportunities, the president says it’s important for teens to learn new skills and develop a work ethic.

This administration, not to mention countless congressional Dems, spend their days implying that there should be such a thing as a free lunch when it comes to health care, higher education and well, lunch. Additionally, they’re making it increasingly easy to obtain public assistance (and rewarding those who promote it), pushing very long term unemployment compensation while saying it’s good for the economy, and repeating class warfare rhetoric that suggests the effort to succeed is futile because greedy rich people will only confiscate the fruits of our labor — and now we’re supposed to believe those same people care about setting examples that will allow kids to develop a work ethic?

So now Obama is tyring to take credit for the idea of unpaid internships?

Here is what the administration had to say about unpaid internships in 2010:

The Obama administration is planning to crack down on companies that don’t pay interns.

The Labor Department says most times it’s illegal for millions of students to spend a summer, semester or year learning the inside of a private sector industry often for school credit – but no pay.

Unpaid internships are considered legal only if they are truly structured educational experiences for the benefit of the intern rather than the company and offer no promise of a job after the internship ends.

“If they’re performing administrative tasks, clerical tasks, answering phones, getting copies – things that would otherwise displace a regular employee, then the Department of Labor may find that to be more looking like an employee than an intern,” said Kara Maciel, a labor attorney at Epstein, Becker and Green, adding that those internships should be paid

Don’t even get me started on minimum wage. Here in WA ST they have the automatic minimum wage increase yearly. It is now up to $9.04 as of Jan 1st. It is only going to lead to further layoffs.

They also want to level the playing field between interns who can afford to work for free and those who can’t.

“If you can’t have an unpaid internship because you need to work, you’re poor, or your family just doesn’t have the means, you’re cut out and that’s wrong,” said Ross Eisenbrey, vice president of the left-leaning Economic Policy Institute.

Eisenbrey says the law does not apply to nonprofit organizations or the federal government. But Rep. Darrell Issa thinks it should.

The California Republican sent a letter to the White House asking for “a listing of the number of unpaid interns and volunteers at the White House… along with a short description of their duties.”

He believes the White House should live up to its own standard.

“If the government can’t do it, certainly it’s not fair to ask the private sector to do it in this case,” he said.

The hypocrisy… it BURNS! Are they just white-boarding this shizz in random fashion? It’s just a jumbled mess.

And another “alternative energy” company costs the tax payers money:

The failed Range Fuels wood-to-ethanol factory in southeastern Georgia that sucked up $65 million in federal and state tax dollars was sold Tuesday for pennies on the dollar to another bio-fuel maker with equally grand plans to transform the alternative energy world.

LanzaTech, a New Zealand-based biofuel company, paid $5.1 million for the plant in Soperton. Its main financial backer: Vinod Khosla, a California entrepreneur who also bankrolled Range Fuels, and helped secure its government loans, before Range went bust last year.

LanzaTech hasn’t received the same type of loans, but the company has received $7 million from the U.S. departments of Energy and Transportation to assist in the development of alternative fuels.

So not only did the taxpayers loose $65 million on this comapny that went backrupt we helped a NZ company by giving them $7 million which they then used $5.1 million to buy the bankrupt company.

Since under that system they tax it all from you, what is the difference if they give you an unpayed job and provide you with benefits? Our benevolent overlords will of course be excempted from that system, since they deserve to live like kings, but the rest of us are screwed.

Everything they need except a paycheck.

We might be fortunate to get an allowance provided we do as we are told.

Maybe Comrade Obama is foxier than we think.

Perhaps, or he merely follows his instructions well. One only needs to look at his mentors and cronies to understand why Comrade O does what he does. He gets a second term and the final nail is on the coffin of the Republic.

    Correct.
He himself is nothing more than an empty suit.

Yep, 18 year old boys register for the draft (come on NOW, this is blatant sexual discrimination). Soon Obama will be drafting them for his new Domestic Peace Force as he promised in 2008.

    Thanks Conservatives:

    Three comments back at ya:
    1. The inequality grew because the rich got richer, not because the poor got poorer. Everyone (that paid taxes)took home more money due to the Bush tax cut- the rich just made more use of it. If your wealth is stagnant, and your neighbor’s wealth increases, why is the inequality his fault?
    2. Why are you complaining about just conservatives? Liberals got the same tax cuts, and I don’t recall any rich liberals sending the money back to the government.
    3. Do you know which EU nation has the smallest inequality? That’s right- Greece. Everyone is poor, the country is bankrupt, nobody wants to work or take a cut is their government bennies, and they expect the “rich” countries like Germany to bail them out. Sounds like just what the progs want to institute here.

Ethics really have nothing to do with it, Obama and most dems lacking anything resembling ethics.

The picture of Pelousy et al standing in front of the immortal words of Dear Leader has hit me like a ton of bricks:

What does “We Can’t Wait” really mean?

The founding fathers of our once-great nation wanted us to deliberate and pursue all avenues before making HASTY decisions. The Checks and Balances were placed within our constitutional structure so that no one person would be able to rip the fabric of our country asunder.

My fellow posters, if we don’t gather together and agree to Defeat Barack HUSSEIN Obama, then we, as a Nation, will be done for. Period. We need to convince our brothers and sisters that this battle is for all the marbles.

So much relies on the upcoming vote, and I am asking that we all pray for God’s good grace to help us choose wisely.

I just saw over on drudge that the DoD is investigating who and what was leaked to the movie industry in regards to the Bin Laden raid movie. An article from Moreen Down claims that the writer and director had “top level” access. Rep Peter King said,”The leaks that followed the successful bin Laden mission led to the arrests of Pakistanis and put in danger the mission’s heroes and their families,” King said in a statement Thursday. “Privately, individuals in the intelligence and special operations communities expressed support for my request for a probe. I look forward to an update on the investigation and actions taken thus far.”

Remember this was the movie that was originally set to be realeased in October right before the election (it has been pushed back to December).

You are making the same mistake that others continue to make. This is not an Obama problem. The REPUBLICANS already have the power to stop Obama but choose not to. What is electing a McCain-endorsed liberal one-world-without-borders globalist Republican going to do?

Lose your fear (or at least compartmentalize it someplace) and think this through. We have a corrupt and entrenched one-party system. If we don’t wreck it at the ballot, the Plan B will be uglier.

George Washington didn’t take the lesser of two evils in 1776 which have been to cooperate with the British for fear of losing it all. He went all in for independence. That is what we should all be doing. We need to go all in and stop compromising by holding our noses to vote for the LOTE.

I just heard Trump on Hannity (and they were agreeing on a lot of things) opine that the GOP can’t win if someone runs 3rd party but the right 3rd party candidate could win. I happen to believe that there will be more than one independent running.

Work that into your thinking and the fog will lift. There IS a way out of this THIS YEAR. And the option will be on your ballot. Will you vote for it? Or will you cave to your fears and vote for the LOTE again?

At some point, conservatives have start voting for one of their own. That’s what everyone else does. Liberals ALWAYS vote for liberals. If we did that, liberals could not win. How many more times do we have to hear that America is a right of center country?

If we have the numbers and those numbers vote conservative, the one-party liberal establishment loses. It’s that simple. What is complicated is getting conservatives, once the ballot is in their hands, to dodge all of those bullets, poison darts, booby traps and mines that stand between the top of the ticket and the conservative candidate below. Really? You don’t have that on your ballot? Then what is stopping you!

They better bring it hard otherwise there will be a lot of messed up young Comsomols. Will be anyway, then on to the instigators/enablers. Love to see Holder in a court docket pleading for leniency.

Obama doesn’t need to go out of his way to create volunteer “jobs”; the liberal destruction of the social and environmental (yes, you heard that right) fabric of this country from his failed policies have given plenty abound already.

I obviously can’t endorse wet T-shirt nonsense, but your point is very well driven.

In fact, the larger issue is that there’s not much fiscal incentive for college students to work over the summer anyways, because if the university or school or government finds out, they will say you must put that money towards your beloved education.

Why work when if you don’t they’ll make up the difference in financial aid?
