Scientific American Names Biggest Geek on the Campaign Trail
**Written by Doug Powers
Finally, some news we can use — and it must be important and useful because it’s in a science magazine.
Scientific American has published a report that might help any undecideds from the Geekertarian wing of the Republican Party settle on a candidate:
Newt Gingrich – a.k.a. “Newt Skywalker” – is by far the biggest geek in the GOP presidential field, according to a Scientific American ranking.
Mitt Romney comes in second, and Ron Paul is third among the six candidates reviewed.
[...]
The Scientific American article quotes Bob Walker, a former chairman of the US House Committee on Science (now the Committee on Science, Space, and Technology), who said that Gingrich “would probably be the most knowledgeable president on technology issues ever elected.”The article uses a highly subjective 1 to 5 star ranking in three areas: “Geekiness,” “Policies, and “Associations.” Gingrich got five stars in the first two areas and four in the last.
[...]
Reader reaction to the Jan. 3 “Geek Guide” to GOP candidates is a bit harsh. Some readers describe it as “unserious” more of a “dating guide” than a science profile, and object to using an interest in science fiction – rather than accuracy or expertise in a field – as criteria for assessing a political leader’s science credentials.
This isn’t news to me. Space aliens don’t waste time meeting with non-geeks.
The story at the CS Monitor concludes:
Who do you think is the biggest geek on the 2012 campaign trail?
Not sure… let me think about it for a while I look at a totally unrelated photo chosen completely at random:

Re pic: Next to that, Ron Paul looks downright Spartan!
There is a difference between geeks, nerds, and dweebs. Obama is the latter.
Heck, that picture makes me want his lunch money.
That picture is Matthews porn. It is the photo that he holds in the other hand, in the privacy of his bedroom.
Um…Chris Matthews might even have an enlargement of that picture on his bedroom ceiling!
I understand he also uses it as a bookmark in his Mom’s Glamour magazine.
How about a youtube clip of Obama throwing a baseball? Next time, walk the ball to the plate and hand it to the catcher. There are women and children watching.
That Androgynous Pseudomale on the girl bike is more of a ManGina than a Geek.
With Bachmann out, looks like Obama is the only girl still running this time.
The sad, sad decline of Scientific American.
When I was a young lad, back in the early ’70s, I took my hard-earned paperboy money each month to buy the latest issue of Scientific American as a priority. The articles were complex, dense with graphs and even equations, and, as far as I recall, written by real researchers. I didn’t understand all of it, but that didn’t matter — the feeling of being on the cutting-edge of science was worth the $1.00 or $1.50 or whatever it was that the magazine cost.
Now, that once-great magazine is reduced to the level of “Omni” (does that still exist?) or any of a number of science-for-the-masses magazines that regularly mangle and misinterpret 2-year-old scientific research.
A tragic metaphor for our education and our culture.
And if we had scientific ‘problems’ this rating might even be germane? We don’t, we have economic problems! Lots of them.
Cute. Thanks SA. Next time do some calculations on how many busted MF Global derivative contracts it will/did take to implode the planet? Good gee-whiz type stuff!
some things just hang on long after the real scientists have moved on.
You mean like all the so-called “peer reviewed” Climategate magazines?
So they didn’t rate pResident ‘Smart Power’?
Or, is it in the back with the ads for X-ray Glasses and Sea Monkeys?
When quizzed by GQ about whether he dressed on the left or the right, Barack Obama stated, “no”.
I’m surprised that ILoveMyBikeSeatSmell hasn’t broken into a sweat all over this blog yet. His hero, workin’ it!
Doug – you need to find the pic of Prez Bush bustin’ it on a hard-core bike, with his bodyguards sweatin’ it out in the background. Then post it next to Mom-Jeans/Helmet-Boy.
I used to subscribe to that magazine but stopped. Their editorials were so far to the left it was ridiculous.
Kind of joke that I feel like a mad scientist with the nephews doing well in school. i introduced to their parents, and hence nephews taking D3 and fish oil both thought to help mentally. But then again my sister I believe was taking fish oil while pregnant. And both her and my brother in law are highly intelligent. And not to put myself down, but I was left with the crappy genes in the family – literally.
I can think of lots of words to relate to bho but geek is way down the list. The way bho flops his wrists up and down coming down stairs or up to make a speech looks like some little girl. bho is in no way masculine, IMO.
L
And science has proven such a reliable tool for managing our public affairs. Opps! Did I say affairs? Sorry, Newt.
Hey, Soul, don’t feel too bad. The intelligence gene tags along on the X chromosome. So you would have inherited your intelligence from your mom (who would have both X chromosome from her parents). It’s always a crap-shoot with the chromosomal soup as to which X becomes dominate as far as the intelligence is concerned. The green eyes are something entirely different.
Foreigner-
Blinded by science, I’m on the run
Blinded by science, where do I belong?
What’s in the future, has it just begun
Blinded by science, I’m on the run
Oh c’mon. There was legit stuff back there too. This is where the progscience community has had us over a barrel for years. Personally I see NO breakthroughs on the horizon. Nor any amount of ‘funding’ to facilitate their miraculous appearance?
There’s huge swaths of human history w/ NO advancements! We’ve been conditioned to believe The Next Big Thing! ( like “street cars and women” ) is always just around the corner! Does it really take $172T to figure out what ‘kind’ of women around every street corner..?
tell me about it..
Happy, I am shocked, shocked, at your attitude! And you are a grandmother. LOL.
Thanks, but I’ll go with Rick Santourm.
OT sorta
WOW
What Snerdley just said on Rush is just absolutely so true.
WaterBoyz, It was great wasn’t it? I always listen to Rush and he is not shy going after bho. Rush is 100% correct on how voters want a perfect candidate to vote for, but none will ever be found.
L
Well, how do you think I became a grandmother? Not by joining a convent!
Wow, Rush is doing great today!
L
Rush gives me a lift like no one else can!! I missed him terribly over the Christmas holidays. Sometimes I feel like he is my only link to sanity in this world! It is gratifying that so many people listen to him…over 25 million per day! That gives me hope!
Hey, Happyscrapper, hope you’ll see this. Green eyes as in green-eyed monster of envy. BTW, my eyes are blue.
RC-Never even heard of that, but I do remember “She blinded me with science” by Thomas-one hit wonder-Dolby back in the 80s. Also, nice Seinfeld reference above re: Glamour magazine!
GEORGE: (Not really wanting to embellish) ..I stopped by the house to drop the car off, and I went inside for a few minutes.. Nobody was there – they’re supposed
to be working. (Jerry and Elaine look at each other – enjoying the story) My mother had a Glamour magazine, I started leafing through it..
JERRY: “Glamour”?
(Kramer and Elaine laugh slightly)
GEORGE: ..So, one thing lead to another..
Don’t insult us geeks by calling Obrainless one of us. He’s a dweeb, all the negative aspects of dorkdom without the intelligence or skill of the nerd and geek.
I don’t give a crap about “baggage.” Newt Skywalker still has my vote. It’s too bad that the Jackass Party is dictating RINO Romney (aka Obama-Lite)as their favorite (just like McLame). Hasn’t anyone even thought about why?? Google “RACISM In Mormonisn” sometime. 3.2 Million stories. Just what do you think Assholerod and his minions are going to do with that much ammunition??? RINO Romney will be DONE before his first speech as nominee. I’m stickin’ with Newt Skywalker. Too bad the rest of the STUPID American people don’t get it!?!
The only song that will ever fit the Sock Puppet is
“Turd on the Run”
I rate Barry Soetoro at “3 pocket-protectors.”
Gingrich is only “2 eyeglass tape.”
Thomas Sowell had some interesting comments on Newt a couple of weeks back in which he essentially said: Look, the man has some real accomplishments under his belt and we’re voting for a president, not a saint. These are not bad points and coming as they do from Sowell, naturally I pay attention. My problem with Newt is the man’s incredibly powerful enemy that constantly keeps him from greatness. That enemy is, of course, Newt himself. He has a serious lack of control, the inner discipline the next president will have to possess as we enter a hellish decade and quite possibly the last for the Republic. Yeah, I’m quite unhappy with the choices we have, but nobody asked me so we have to deal with the hand as dealt. Sorry Newt, and my apologies to Thomas Sowell.
Newt has a PhD in .. history. This is why I pay no attention to Scientific American anymore. It used to be a respected science magazine…
I think one of the most scientific and technologically aware candidate we’ve seen in a long time is Herman Cain.
Yeah, that and a dime will get you exactly nothing. Our good candidates have all been effectively trashed by the media and are now gone. Nothing left but the bozos. I am heartsick that we have come to this…another John McCain campaign. Another bad candidate thrust upon us.
I will not be able to force myself to work for or campaign for ANY of them. I will not contribute to ANY of them. I will save my hard-earned money to take care of my family. That is all that will be left when the regressives finish off the greatest country the world has ever seen.
I don’t have any fight left in me.
I began reading Scientific American when I was 13 (my late brother was at the USAFA). I canceled my subscription a decade or so ago when they editorialized that KS state schools should reject applicants who were home-schooled.
In my view, Scientific American no longer has the standing it once had when Edison and Einstein published articles in that magazine. Now, it is just another outlet for bad “environmental science”, kinda like Newsweek.
Hey “BeenThere,” by letting RINOs and Doltocrats dictate our candidate (otherwise known a RINO Romney, aka Obama-Lite), you are right about Sowell, but Sowell is right, it’s Newt, NOT RINOs. Hey America, doesn’t it ever make you wonder why the Jackass Party and yes, so-called Republicrats, are dealing our “hand” from the BOTTOM of the deck???
