Gingrich Tells South Carolina Man He’d Talk to Al Sharpton

By Doug Powers  •  January 21, 2012 04:26 PM

Yes, there’s no better way to calm the racial seas than by getting Al Sharpton involved in the conversation.

From The Hill:

Newt Gingrich was confronted by a black man outside Tommy’s Country Ham House, who questioned him on his comments on having poor children work as janitors.

The man said what Gingrich was asking for amounted to a “new form of slavery” and would force young African Americans to drop out of school.

Gingrich engaged the man, speaking levelly and holding eye contact with him. He said that he suggested the jobs so that “They can get paid — they’d go to school, stay in school instead of dropping out.”

The man persisted. “You say you want Afro-Americans to come into your political party but you’ve ratcheted [your rhetoric] up since you got down here,” he said.
[...]
The man then said he’d spoken with Rev. Al Sharpton and asked Gingrich to meet with him, Roland Martin of CNN, Ben Jealous of the NAACP and Juan Williams.

“Sure — glad to do it,” Gingrich said. “I’d be willing to do it. I know Al.”

The protester kept pushing for the meeting as Gingrich talked, demanding that he meet with the black community.

Gingrich nodded his head after the man interrupted him, and agreed. “Sure — and find a way to have everybody have a chance for a better future,” he said.

Going to Al Sharpton for advice on the subject of improving the tone of racial rhetoric is like getting help overcoming an addiction to prop comedy by talking to Carrot Top.

Newt and Al aren’t strangers, but if Gingrich does follow through on a meeting, for his own good I hope he waits until the current campaign is over… just in case the mini-summit culminates in another ill-advised public service announcement. Resist you much, Newt.

Why is it no one is latching onto the obvious in all this ‘food stamp/janitor’ racial flap? It has been the liberal media (there is nothing “mainstream” about them at all) that equated ‘poor’ with ‘black’. All black Americans should be outraged at such a cbaracterization.

Sharpton et al have brainwashed the black poor into believing ALL Republicans and Conservatives are BAD. There is really no changing the minds of these folks. They are lost. They worship the color of their leader’s skin and that is all they see and all they need to know about Obama, Sharpton, Jackson, etc. If these black lemmings were told to go play on the freeway, they would run out there without question. They have been brainwashed since childhood, growing up in poor families and going to crumbling schools. There is no way they can envision anything different. Al Sharpton blames Whitey and makes sure “his people” don’t get the tools to break out of poverty. If someone suggests they get a PAYING job after school, cleaning the hallways, emptying wastebaskets, etc., in order to earn some money and develop a work ethic…Sharpton makes sure they hear racism and slavery in those remarks. We seem to have lost a huge section of the black people and it is all thanks to the likes of the Al Sharptons of this country. I wish it had been him instead of MLK, Jr. on that balcony in Memphis. And Jesse Jackson right next to him.

I notice that too. The media keeps changing the phrase “the poor” into “the poor black”. I have heard the original versions of these statements and black was not mentioned until the race hustlers got in the mix and changed the words. They want the blacks to believe that whenever the word “poor” comes up, that means THEM! The fact remains that there are more whites on food stamps than blacks. But don’t let facts get in the way of a great big fat lie!! We wouldn’t want our black brothers and sisters to get out of the ghetto, now would we? Lost votes. Can’t have that!

When you look at the total numbers, however, the majority of people in poverty in the U.S. are White. 47% of the people in poverty in the United States are White. I just got through reading Thomas Sowell’s latest 4-part series of columns that deal with that exact point. Those are some excellent pieces, and they center around the fact that never in human history has there been a society where every demographic does equally well in all fields, and so it’s completely unrealistic to assume that when it happens it must be because there’s “discrimination” or some other unfair treatment going on.

But I highly recommend reading it all to anyone who has the time.

The problem with Newt meeting with Al Sharpton – and I think he should, as Jesus met with the tax collectors and sinners of His day without question – is the absence of any ‘meeting of the minds’. Newt Gingrich and Al Sharpton come from two very different areas of Americana. Though both speak English, neither would understand what the other is saying. As a reference, I direct everyone’s attention back to a debate Sharpton had with Rick Santorum on Hannity a few years back. Santorum was absolutely brilliant in his defense of the unborn by separating ‘personhood’ from ‘a life’. Sharpton had not a clue as to what the senator was saying. This is not meant to disparage Al Sharpton. I like the man. But in a discussion born within the arena of ideas, the man is out of his element – especially with men like Santorum or Gingrich occupying the opposite side.

As an aside, can anyone tell me how you comment on someone else’s comment?

    Why say Janitors.

It was part of his way of highlighting the absurd salaries that janitors in public schools pull down. He was absolutely correct when he pointed out that for the price of one union janitor a school could hire dozens of kids who would probably do a better job.

Newt very much should be criticized for saying wrong things, like his ill-advised-and-informed attacks on Bain Capital. But he should be cut down for speaking the truth, imo. We have better things to save our ammo for.

We would be no better than the divisive Obama if that were the case. That said, it isn’t black or white and by that I mean, it’s not either snub them or get in bed with them. Cut and paste the text you want to respond to (it would also help if you include the poster’s name and time stamp on his post, so that others can follow the discussion). Use the “Quote” button to surround that text with HTML tags: have the cursor the beginning of the quoted text when you click the button the first time, and then at the end of the text when you click it the second time (the only difference between the two tags that pop up should be the presence of the “/” in the second tag).

I’ve been waiting a long time to have a Republican forcefully respond to the liberal mass media, and radical progressives in government. They, who have literally gotten away with murder, must now have their justly deserved comeuppance!

Can you imagine how quickly this country would turn around if we got a new group of UN-pusillanimous conservatives elected to office?

I pray that conservatives take Newt’s lead, and start hitting back when the LSM and the Democrats start spinning facts, and lying about policy. I also hope they will start calling them out, and naming names when the liberals go on TV to lie or propagandize issues.

The time for turning the other cheek has come and gone! Progressives, and their ideological partners, the radical Islamist hierarchy, see compromise as a sign of weakness. They need to be disabused of that notion!

Newt’s comments to the man who confronted him do not suggest that Newt would be, “Going to Al Sharpton for advice.” Going one-on-one with the “Resist we much” Man, Newt would probably have the Rev’s tongue tied into a pretzel in about two minutes.

I’m in agreement with Buckley @#56. Newt would be able to hold his own well against this race baiter. Sharpton is not well spoken and he will be shown to be an incompetent boob against Newt, so bring it, regressives.

I refuse to put the ‘ic’ after democrat, because they proved they don’t deserve the ‘ic’. They should put ‘ist’.

Most of my life, as far back as I can remember – which is 90yrs – their party name was “Democrat”.

I seem to remember, in the early 2000s, (2003 keeps popping-up in my mind…) they changed it.

Since my big stroke, my memory of “near” events – time-wise – has fuzzied-out, so I might be assigning it to the wrong actors… but I do remember Kennedy(I think) in a radio interview saying “…it isn’t really a change, ‘Democrat’ isn’t really a word… it was always ‘the Democratic Party’…” and the press had just made an innocent error. I also clearly remember other Donkeys parroting the line in subsequent interviews over the months that followed. And Limbaugh poking fun at the change, but not really driving home what the DemonCrap’s obvious goal was.

Now, even in my Grandson’s text books (their district is “field testing” new ones…) every Donkey Party Member is from “The Democratic Party”… Wilson, FDR, Mr.Peanut, BJ ― and of course, that boil-on-the-rectal-ring of the Body Politic: Prez!Stinky™. BTW, these new texts speak glowingly about both hIM and The First Appetite.

The whole situation is just SOP ― what Progressives DO: Change the language to frame the un-evolved – ie,”The Sheep”‘s thoughts and discussion so as to control them… and then lie about doing it.

Well, I have old history books! I’ve shown more than one person the difference between what Progies say happened and what actually took place!

So, when someone corrects me, I act obtuse, leading them to tell me they were ‘…always called “The Democratic Party”!’ I then show them the truth and ask: if someone blatantly lies to cover an insignificant thing such as a name change, what would they do to keep all the goodies accruing from making laws that they themselves have immunity from and manipulate businesses and industries for dishonest friends?

Then I trot out the stats (& the locations of the information so they can check…) of who made their fortune while in congress, etc.

I’ve changed a few minds… but not nearly enough.

martin musculus #59, you and me bud. I’m only 76, but I recall very well that they were called Democrats and have successfully changed the word to Democratic. Now they want to change it to “Progressive,” not realizing (or not caring) that the Progressives in our times were openly members of the Communist Party, U.S.A.

As you say, they are masters at revising history and creating new meanings for words. Regrettably, our kids and grandkids are being manipulated by teachers and textbooks that are involved in those two efforts.

I don’t change many minds either. Liberals are so entrenched in their beliefs that there seems to be no redemption for them.
