Gingrich channels open-borders SEIU; Rubio rebukes; Update:Newt retreats

Photoshop: Reader Jimmy D.

Yesterday, the SEIU and left-wing USA Action launched Spanish-language radio attacks on Mitt Romney for his support of immigration enforcement measures. One of Romney’s advisers is Kris Kobach — a constitutional law professor, Kansas Secretary of State, and staunch leader in the fight against illegal alien amnesty and ACORN-style voter fraud.

Eliseo Medina, the secretary-treasurer of Service Employees International Union, blasted Romney on Monday during a conference call announcing a Spanish-language radio ad the union is launching in partnership with Priorities USA Action, a super-PAC supporting President Obama.

Medina, the No. 2 official at the influential union, was reacting to an answer Romney gave at a debate Monday night where he said “self-deportation” was the answer to ridding the country of illegal immigrants.

“It’s basically to say, ‘Make their life miserable’” by refusing to rent to them or to provide access to heat and water,” Medina said. “Make it difficult for their kids and their schools.”

Asked by The Hill how Romney’s comments could be construed to imply that illegal immigrants should be denied basic necessities, Medina pointed to Romney’s close relationship with Kansas Secretary of State Kris Kobach, who has endorsed Romney. Kobach has been credit with writing most of Alabama’s harsh anti-illegal immigration law, which has been challenged in the courts.

“Mr. Romney has said he wants to support and he joins in supporting Kris Kobach,” Medina said. “When he says he supports those kinds of policies, he has to own all of it.”

“This is a dishonest smear from President Obama’s liberal allies and a desperate attempt to distract from his abysmal record,” said Romney adviser Albert Martinez. “It will do nothing to help the millions of Hispanics who have been hit especially hard as a result of the Obama economy.”

Martinez said Hispanics, like all Floridians, believe Romney is the best person to rebuild the economy and to replace Obama.

Well, look now, who’s mimicking the open-borders SEIU and blurring the lines between illegal and legal immigration.

Yep. Newt Gingrich:

Sen. Marco Rubio scolded Newt Gingrich’s presidential campaign over a Spanish-language radio ad that accuses rival Mitt Romney of being “anti-immigrant”

“This kind of language is more than just unfortunate. It’s inaccurate, inflammatory, and doesn’t belong in this campaign,” Rubio told The Miami Herald when asked about the ad.

“The truth is that neither of these two men is anti-immigrant,” Rubio said. “Both are pro-legal immigration and both have positive messages that play well in the Hispanic community.”

Rubio’s sharp rebuke comes a day after he subtly corrected Gingrich for comparing Romney to former Florida Gov. Charlie Crist, branded by conservatives as a turncoat who left the party before Rubio beat him in 2010.

The criticisms from someone of Rubio’s stature in the Republican Party comes as polls show a near-even race, albeit with Gingrich surging.

Rubio plans to stay neutral in the race. He’s a potential running mate whom both candidates would love to have on the ballot.

The truth is that neither Gingrich nor Romney has a strong, consistent overall record on border security and enforcement. But at least Romney’s been traveling in the right direction…while Gingrich once again echoes left-wing language and plays the race card to get ahead.

Nose plugs. Get out yer nose plugs.

***

Newt and his supporters have been deriding the notion of self-deportation as some sort of alien, offensive concept. Long-time readers of this blog and of my investigative work on immigration have been familiar with it for years. It’s attrition through enforcement, it’s humane, and it works.

***

Can you be more two-faced? Newt has been winning massive adoration and applause for claiming he’ll stand up for states like South Carolina and Alabama, which have been sued by the Obama DOJ over tough immigration laws. Then he joins the likes of the SEIU and slams the very “anti-immigrant” policies authored by Kris Kobach that the Obama DOJ wants to overturn.

Emetic of the day.

***

Update: Newt retreats. From GOP Hispanic leaders calling him out, via the Miami Herald:

While we may have differences of opinion with regard to some of Governor Romney’s policies on immigration, we nonetheless stand firmly behind him because we know he is the most qualified conservative candidate to defeat President Obama and to lift up all Americans, including Hispanics.

Like your attacks on the free market, attacking Mitt Romney as “anti-immigrant” only serves President Obama and his liberal allies.

Mr. Speaker, our party deserves better.

Newt is trying to present himself as a Goldwater and Tea Party Republican, when in reality he is a Rockefeller and Dede Scozzafava Republican.

    The Real Newt Gingrich

I find both Mitt Romney and Newt Gingrich unacceptable as Presidential nominees. (Here’s why I don’t trust Romney.)

My choice for the primary is between Rick Santorum and Ron Paul, and I favor Rick Santorum, but also think that Ron Paul is actually more electable because he would draw more Democrats in the general election.

    November 10, 2010

DanMan’s Manifesto on the illegal alien situation.

    First a few basic knowns.
    1. There are somewhere between 12 to 25 million illegal aliens living in this country. Something like 4% to 8.5% of the US population or so.
    2. We have many incentives besides employment opportunities that lure illegal immigrants and extend our social safety net.
    3. We are probably the only developed country in the world that rewards illegal aliens having babies within our borders by granting them some sort of status that eventually allows them to bring in their extended families for similar status.

Suppose we reform our approach to illegal immigration enforcement. Let’s set a date certain our new immigration laws are strictly enforced and that would include no allowance for providing a US birth certificate for any baby born to a non legal resident citizen. Not a green card holder’s baby, not a consulate member’s baby, not a sight seeing tourist’s baby, no interpretation at all. On that same date we cut off all social services to any non legal resident. If this seems draconian, just insert whatever tenets we place in our new immigration laws that we can consider “comprehensive”, but it must include enforcement. Of course this date certain will mean we have the ability to enforce our borders. If the borders cannot be certified to be sealed, permanently cut all of congress’ pay by 20% until it can be certified sealed. Cut an additional 10% per week until it is achieved. *UPDATE: The DC politicians have conceded the point regarding citizenship with their DREAM act legislation by attempting to give citizenship to anchor babies. They recognize they are not citizens and we need to gain control of the issue legislatively before the courts step in.*

Now we have a window of 24 years since we last granted amnesty that will have the birthdays of the millions of people who were born here to non legal residents and their relatives. Let’s assume they all want to become citizens and we give them a pathway. They will have to register by a certain date and provide key elements of identification that will be matched biometrically (it’s our country, they are not yet citizens, we get to make the rules).*UPDATE: Perhaps an identification card with GPS capabilities could be a viable option since it is already a requirement to carry ID and it would also allow us to track them.* After this date certain our data base potential should not be growing at all so that at least gives us some time to breathe. The data we collect will determine the potential status to start the process to citizenship. Criteria would include several categories and include command of the language, criminal record, record of paying taxes, record of using social services, etc. The information will be sorted to move those most assimilated towards the top and those that have shown to be a net loss lower in status. For those that have criminal records, evaluate them. Use of social services, evaluate them, allow them to pay our country back to improve the status. Basically allow for the sorting of the people that want to become to citizens and have shown the ability and willingness to improve themselves the opportunity to filter up and the least desirables to filter down with the chance to improve their condition.

All of these people will be in line BEHIND the people that are currently going through our legal process. None of them can achieve citizenship faster than a regular case emigrant that is in line on the date certain. That should not be that much of a hardship since they will basically be allowed to live their lives as they are except for the use of social services, which will not be available. That would also stop the political parties from reaching for/worried about a major imbalance of political power as we just saw in Nevada. It may take 10 years to get the mess sorted out but the beauty is the people that are waiting and working and improving their lives will have a vested interest in obeying the law to keep their status and they will know that they will not be kicked out if they do so. By the time they get citizenship they will be assimilated and have a stake in this country. They will have had time to see how our country works. For those that don’t want to make the sacrifice, ahem…go home.

I do not accept that an illegal alien that has gotten away with living here for a year is invested in our nation or state. I worked the entire time I was in college from delivering the Chronicle to working at UPS at night, waiting tables, working for the school, basically anything I could find. I paid full ride for my kids to attend A&M and UT with no assistance from anybody. It was hard and it did not allow my wife and I an opportunity to put aside anything for the years we paid that tuition.

I am sure there are loose ends that need to be cleaned up but I will always side with the more draconian way to achieve a resolution.

Respectfully, that isn’t enough. A real solution to the problem does include those things, but must also eliminate the ability to get, and more importantly, to HOLD or maintain jobs here. (After all, for an unauthorized person to hold any employment in the US, necessarily requires that person to break no less than 2 or 3 Federal laws — which go under-enforced all too often). There is no ‘right’ enshrined in US law for any foreign national to get/hold a job in the US — none. Keeping the ‘extras’ out of bounds is helpful, but going after the ability for them to get jobs is even more important. Paul could do much better in this regard. Specifically, he has not espoused a national mandate for employers to use E-Verify in hiring and later screening employees.

    https://www.numbersusa.com/content/action/2012-presidential-hopefuls-immigration-stances.html

(mouse over Rep. Paul to display the follow pop up summary)

“Although Rep. Paul has always said he opposes amnesties, he also refuses to back enforcement measures that would lead to signficant attrition of the illegal population. He is particularly weak on removing the jobs magnet that keeps illegal aliens in the country. His own book in early 2011 suggested a legalization that would provide legal residence and work permits but not citizenship. However, in all the months of debates and campaigning since, he has not promoted that idea (nor has he repudiated it). His strong advocacy of turning off the benefits magnet helps him to a FIRST STEPS rating.”

Now, having said all that, I will say there are a LOT of positions if his I really agree with. This is particularly true of his foreign policy/defense beliefs. I am not a Paul-basher by any means — just drawing attention to the fact he could do better and would be even more popular as a result.

They certainly don’t want the Republicans to have their turn at trampling them the way they just did the Republicans when the Dems held the House. LOL.

Disabuse yourselves of the notion that the solution does not include some anchor baby and other amnesty also – due to political and bureaucratic misfeasance over the last 25 years. Statute of limitations etc…

This is why we need direct and punative accountability for politicians and bureaucrats. Since they only enforce laws that suit them, Liberals have to learn that they will most certainly pay for their sins of omission.

    Reagan’s Young Lieutenant

Why would one in the position Mitt Romney now finds himself — thoroughly defeated in South Carolina by a surge of support for Gingrich’s conservatism — ever even entertain the idea of going after Newt Gingrich on Reagan?

Who knows why Romney gets tongue tied ? Or, as our friends at the Wall Street Journal note, “befuddled.”

But the very fact of this latest attack on Gingrich for what Romney tries to imply is Newt’s lack of ties to Reagan shows the “Massachusetts Moderate” (as Gingrich tags him) is unfamiliar with the details of Gingrich’s role. Worse, Romney indicates a considerable ignorance about why Gingrich and others — none of whom painted conservatism by the numbers — were there fighting in the first place. All working under Reagan’s leadership to begin to right a ship of state that was perilously close to the rocks in 1981 — economically, socially, and on issues of national security.

Be that as it may, Romney has raised the question of Newt Gingrich’s real role in the Reagan era. So let’s take a look.

    http://spectator.org/archives/2012/01/24/reagans-young-lieutenant/print

Why did Newt Gingrich win South Carolina?

Because he was one of Reagan’s Lieutenants. A member of Reagan’s Murderers Row of conservative stars.

It’s too soon to know whether the conservative Gingrich or the moderate Romney will win this nomination. Or, yes, Santorum. Or even, if all those panicked rumblings from the Washington Establishment are true, someone not yet in the race — a Daniels, Jindal, or Ryan.

But whatever happens, quite unlike the picture Romney is trying to paint of his prime opponent in South Carolina, Newt Gingrich was very much present and accounted for on the Reagan team. To borrow from Reagan’s farewell address to the nation and the men and women who served him, Newt Gingrich wasn’t just marking time. He made a difference. He helped make that City on a Shining Hill stronger. He helped make the City freer.

Quite to the contrary of the Romney message, Newt Gingrich was in fact one of Reagan’s Young Lieutenants.

    One of the best.

Could Mr Gingrich please come to my $395 a month 1 bedroom apartment, sit on my 10 year old loveseat I laughingly refer to as a couch, and please inform me as to the account numbers of my Swiss bank accounts and Cayman Island accounts, and explain to me what happened to my $20 million a year for doing nothing?

Apparently in Gingrich’s delusional world, every single illegal alien invader is a grandmother… presumably the grandmother of someone born here.

You have to live in some inside-the-Beltway fantasyland to think that the illegal aliens who’ve invaded us from south of the border did so with a desire to be American, rather than a desire to make money. You have to live in some inside-the-Beltway fantasyland to believe that we are getting decent, American-in-all-but-birthplace, cream of Mexican and Latin American societies, rather than the dregs of those same failed societies.

How is it that a lion tamer can control several lions without being eaten or mauled?

One thing is the platforms the poor creatures are made to stand on. They are not *quite* large enough for the lion to stand on. Therefore, the lion is constantly worrying about his balance, rather than eating the lion tamer.

Now, picture Obama and company as the lion tamer. Picture the American people as the lion, and picture his endless regulations, made-up crises, the perpetually in fail economy, and you have the platform upon which the lions of America are trying to perch.

Obama claims that Warren Buffets secretary pays more taxes than does Buffet

That is one of the problems. Obama made that actual claim. However, it’s obvious that Buffet paid more tax dollars than his secretary. A lot more. It’s the rate they are talking about but Obama obfuscates that fact to paint a different picture in the minds of voters. He is misleading them.

Take muni bonds. They are tax free investments. If I make a lot of money and quit working and invest all that money in muni bonds, I will pay zero in taxes but will get a return that I live on. Whats wrong with that? Nothing. I also could have invested my money in ventures that lost money. The Federal government only allows me to recoup some of that money each year so I carry it forward for years and pay less taxes. I could have taken it all in one year and got tax money back. They make me spread it. It is fair.

I pay tax when I earn money. I pay tax on the earnings the invested savings gives me. If I get less than the secretary, then I will pay less but there are investment vehicles I can use legally. Munis are tax free to get me to invest in them. They may pay a lower return than other places I put the money. We all make choices.

I feel the exact same way! My cousin, Capt. John Parker was the first Leader of the Minutemen who fought the first battle of the Revolution.
If I had any relatives in the Revolution they were Hessians.

I only know about Hessians because in Regency-era England, Hessian-style boots became really popular with the fancy gentlemen.

    I am a huge nerd. :)

Stacey…you attributed this part of the quote to Flyoverman when it was me who has the Capt. Parker cousin and Flyoverman has the Hessians. Just setting the record straight for future reference!

Off topic…Has anyone seen the dust-up in Congress today with Henry “the nose” Waxman and an “R” whose name escapes me?

This was about the pipeline and Waxman decided that the Koch Brothers have an interest in the pipeline going through so therefore, the Koch Brothers should be subpoena’d to come to a hearing about it. Henry Waxman is certifiably insane. WTF?? Isn’t he the same guy who wants hearings on everyone? Just haul all our private industry leaders into Congress to answer to the Big Bad Government, because, well, WE work for Waxman, doncha know!!

Fortunately, he got smacked down real good!

If I find a link I will put it here. Actually, this is something MM might have a thread about soon.

Also, Juan Williams says that the republicans are making a big deal about the pipeline for “political reasons”. Gee, Juan, maybe it is because the pipeline is actually GOOD FOR THE COUNTRY!! Juan Williams is another freak. And believe me, it is not because of the color of his skin! It is his teeny tiny little worthless brain.
