Stimulus-Backed ‘Green’ Bankruptcy of the Week: Ener1

When the story of the Department of Energy’s green loan program is written someday, the entire book will be contained in chapter 11:

After months of financial turmoil, an Energy Department-backed lithium ion battery company has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection.

The company, Ener1, received a $118 million grant from DOE in 2010 as part of the president’s stimulus package. The money, which went to Ener1 subsidiary EnerDel, aimed to promote renewable energy storage battery technology for electrical grid use.

But despite generous federal support for the company, Ener1 was racked by problems last year. In October, NASDAQ delisted the company due to non-compliance with Securities and Exchange Commission filing requirements. A month later, the company’s president, chief executive, and top financial officer were fired.

On Thursday, Ener1 announced it will initiate a pre-packaged Chapter 11 bankruptcy plan as part of an agreement to restructure the company’s debt obligations.

The problem? Something the government often fails to take into account when spending tons of other people’s money because they think it can be artificially created later on: Product demand:

In a statement announcing the company’s bankruptcy, CEO Alex Sorokin said that the company’s business plan was crippled by insufficient consumer demand.

“We moved aggressively to reduce costs and shift focus when the marketplace did not evolve as quickly as anticipated. Our business plan was impacted when demand for lithium-ion batteries slowed due to lower-than-expected adoption for electric passenger vehicles,” Sorokin wrote.

Translation: You’re not buying Volts fast enough, America!

Not long ago, Ener1 was the proud recipient of a big sloppy Recovery Summer kiss of death from our very own Sheriff Joe Biden:

There will be others.

It’s a predetermined and designed failure when it comes to spending other people’s, i.e. taxpayers, money. The concept is to sucker the public with responsible “green” energy investment, while at the same time reward and enrich oneself and cronies at the expense of the public. So what if tons of money are poured into failure as long as those responsible for it come out richer for the effort.

In the end the only “green” these people desire is the cash in their bank accounts.

Make for beautimous and warm clothing for children of the magnificent People’s State.” The Russians never had such a bountiful larder as ours to tap into, but our Soviets will wreck us even more quickly due to their greed.

This is the definition of gross criminal malfeasance. I would vote for Ron Paul for this reason alone. He would run this crap into the s*it can and put its pushers in jail.

This is why government in the wrong hands is so incredibly toxic and dangerous. Without a strict fiscal “governor” in place (a balanced budget amendment with a hard % of GDP cap) the politicians will run the government throttle wide open. It is an open invitation to corruption. It will only get worse.

This is why history is so important. We have not learned our lesson apparently, at least those of us “educated” in government schools. Communism, Communitarianism, Socialism, whatever you call it, tries to declare and dictate things to function a certain way. Its proponents are adamant in declaring that government be commandeered to impose these failed Marxian policies on society. The human spirit will not permit that to happen, and it is the human spirit alone that drives healthy commerce and economies. By definition, anything else is tyranny.

My point and what scares the heck out of me is that he is planning to gut the military and what is left will have to use very expensive intermittent power. I can see it now, someone trying determine if there is a hostile launch in another country, a cloud blocks out the solar array and his screen goes blank.

Along your point, private home owners would buy this power… right up to when they find out it will cost upwards of 6 times as much. Nobody in their right mind would pay that except a liberal President shoving it down the throat of the military.

I am sure that the military is ecstatic to see their fuel costs quadrupling overnight. Of course this means that fuel budgets will have to be decreased to 1/4 what they are now, or less because commanding officers will be told to suck it up and “make it happen”. It was bad enough when I was in a Navy Squadron 15 years ago and we were having to rob parts off of good airplanes just to fix broken ones because there were not enough parts in the supply system. The good news is that, unlike Solyndra, we don’t have to be angry over government loans not being paid back – this one was a GRANT!

Also, where does one get a “pre-packaged Chapter 11 bankruptcy plan?” Do they carry them at Sam’s Club? Does it come with chips?

I think it’s the OB form 32, kinda like OB form 31 (waiver from Obamacare). I think you have to a “friend” of the administration to get the OB form series though.

Forget the Feds. IL has come up with a new way to fund future green company bankruptcies. Gov Quinnocchio has proposed a $1 increase in the yearly IL license plate fee to go directly into a new slush fund to invest in building electric cars. He’s cuttin’ out the middlemen in DC. He don’t need no stinkin’ Obama to crap away taxpayer money–he’ll confiscate it through higher fees and piss it away on his own.

So what was Obama’s grade in Econ 101?

No such thing as “Econ 101″ in our bastions of higher learning. It has been renamed “Marxist Theory” (and I’m only half-kidding).

He’s not “Sheriff Joe”; it’s Vice President “Deputy Fife” Biden.

Can’t someone wire Sheriff Joe’s barstool to a Chevvy Dolt battery and give him some “green” energy to his rear end to wipe that dumb smirk off his face? Maybe smoking his shorts will wake him up.
