Jerry Brown: C’mon, California’s High Speed Rail Will Be Way Cheaper Than $100 Billion
**Written by Doug Powers
Late last year it was reported that California’s high speed rail project wouldn’t be completed for 22 years and would end up costing about $100 billion, which is three times the initial estimate. The project received over $2 billion from the stimulus.
Gov. Jerry Brown now says the cost won’t be nearly that much, because somehow carbon fees levied on businesses (some of which would no doubt flee the state) will fund a good portion of the construction:
“It’s not going to be $100 billion,” the Democratic governor said on ABC 7′s Eyewitness Newsmakers program. “That’s way off.”
Brown’s remarks come as his administration prepares revisions to the California High-Speed Rail Authority’s latest business plan. Brown is trying to push the project through an increasingly skeptical Legislature following a series of critical reports.
“Phase 1, I’m trying to redesign it in a way that in and of itself will be justified by the state investment,” Brown said. “We do have other sources of money: For example, cap-and-trade, which is this measure where you make people who produce greenhouse gasses pay certain fees – that will be a source of funding going forward for the high speed rail.”
Brown said, “It’s going to be a lot cheaper than people are saying.”
Wait a minute. So if industry stops spewing greenhouse gases into the atmosphere right now (thereby of course saving the planet from global warming) there won’t be enough cap/trade money for the government to build the latest bankruptcy-inducing glimmer in Joe Biden’s eye? I’ve yet to hear a more convincing argument for going green.
Not unlike the government taxing tobacco and using some of the money to pay for SCHIP, the “green” movement has developed a Catch-22 dependence the very things they seek to eliminate. So keep those smokestacks spewing filth and pay those carbon fees, California industry, because Moonbeam has a “green” rail system to pay for so the planet can be saved from global warming!
At least it helps explain recent decisions like this.
I’m amazed by a bureaucratic mindset that believes forcing a portion of the price tag of a bloated project onto select areas of the private sector will lower the cost to the government, and therefore the taxpayers.
Take it away, Governor:

He didn’t think it through.
I propose taking all of Northern California, except parts of the Bay Area.
Even places like Marin, Monterey and Humbolt counties would jump at the chance to be free of the LA,SF,Sacramento domination.
CA went looney long ago which is why I moved to Colorado. My liberal Democrat Barabra Boxer-loving Mom still lives in the house I grew up in, located in Maxine Waters’ district. Need I say more?
That does it, I’m rooting for al Qaeda.
.
CA is broke and will be out of the peoples money in March
Just call it what it is, High-Speed-Fail.
poor, poor California.
Here is a confession (in his own voice in a video) from a LIAR:
http://biggovernment.com/mrctv/2010/10/26/jerry-brown-on-his-first-gubernatorial-campaign-its-all-a-lie-i-didnt-have-a-plan-for-california/
The new California motto “At least we dont have the credit rating of Illinois!”.
Brown is a class A idiot with entrenched socialist ideals.
The voters picked him so who is the bigger idiot?
A Gingrich newt? That WOULD be rare.
Lovely plumage that.
Can I get a high speed rail to my Mom’s house? Can I get environmental wackos to pay for it?
Does it come on a stick?
Meanwhile, American Airlines goes Bankrupt. To survive it moves its pension debt to American Taxpayers and its jobs to another country. “The company will seek to move its pension plans, which it estimates are underfunded by $5 billion, to the Pension Benefit Guaranty Corp., a federal agency that protects the pensions of workers in private-sector retirement plans.
The Pension Benefit Guaranty Corp. has issued numerous statements since the American bankruptcy that it would seek to keep the airline from dumping its pensions on the agency, which is already facing a deficit of its own. The agency’s estimate is that the American pensions are underfunded by $10 billion.”
So tell me, does California plan to use illegal aliens to build the rail?
So it’s official, Newt can regenerate himself, likes sex in the shower, can regrow a spine after adultry, and is a tumor that will grow two faces and be known as the Lizard King if elected.
Our backyard political action committee has dollar bets on California vs Illinois in being first to hold checks from public employees. Per Misscheryl it appears the Ca. guys may take it.
I keep expecting a hard push to federalize state debt. Aren’t we glad we got the house in 2010? It would have been done already.

Only if they can be unionized.
Re: American Airlines – I have to assume public pensions don’t qualify or the folks in Central Falls, RI would be less testy about losing their pensions.
Whatever happened to the Delco(?) subsidiary salaried employees that Obama dumped?
Exactly. +1000
Also +1000
Pensions are a scam. Look at how they are funded. The money is not there to take care of the liability. You just have to have enough money to invest at a certain interest rate to earn the money by the time it is due.
When interest rates change, the company must put in more money if interest rates fall or less money if interest rates go up.
Heres the problem. If a business fails and is no longer in business, they do not have any money to put in or take back when interest rates change. If interest rate fall, then the pension is unfunded and can not pay out the benefits that the people in it thought they would get.
And also, if interest rates fall and the company is not making enough money to fund the liability, that will cause the business to fail. A ponzi scheme.
Might’ve already been mentioned, but they want a big-assed ELECTRIC train in a part of the country that already has rolling blackouts when people use too much electricity.
Electricity, by the way, that is produced primarily by coal-fired plants that the Obama administration is working hard to shut down.
Is Al Franken writing their script??
Pay no attention to the man behind the curtain.
Come on, man. You’re smarter than to ask that question!
Franken isn’t anywhere near clever enough to come up with that story line.
Moonbeam is off his meds again!! Or is that the other way around? Whatever.
I voted for Tom McClintock.
Do NOT blame me for this bozo…….again.
My deepest condolences on seeing Gov. Moonbeam in person.
OT, but a worrying story out of CA.
You can’t walk those dogs without a leash! *ZAP*
Thank you for your thoughts. I was hired to cover an annual event here, and the cause is very worth while. Moonbeam was AG at the time and just about to announce his run for guv (again).
It would be interesting to see what the Park Service allows in their use of tasers. Shooting a person in the back has been a law-enforcement no-no for quite some time. Walking away did not constitute a threat to the officer. Could you imagine if this guy had a pacemaker?
Depending on what the officer conduct rules state, I would probably call the sheriff on her or the FBI since it was a federal officer. I would definitely retain a lawyer and seek to sue the Park Service and the officer.
While I am not condoning what this man may or may not have done (if he was not cooperating), but there was definitely a massive overreaction. If the officer reacted this way, imagine how she would respond in a high-pucker factor situation.
How does using money from a different source make it “cheaper”, especially when both sources come from taxes? Every industry that produces and transports anything, produces CO2. So a Cap and Trade tax will make railroad parts MORE expensive, not cheaper.
Obviously, Gov. Moonbeam plans to put wind turbines on top of the train. Duh!
