Trump to Make ‘Major Announcement’ in Nevada; May Endorse Gingrich; Update: Romney

By Doug Powers  •  February 1, 2012 10:09 PM

**Written by Doug Powers

Before we chew on any of the possibilities, it’s important to remember that the next season of Celebrity Apprentice kicks off in just over two weeks, and The Donald isn’t one to let a prime promotional opportunity slip by.

With that little disclaimer out of the way, there’s this from KLAS-TV:

An advisor to Donald Trump says he will make a major announcement in Las Vegas tomorrow. Sources tell the 8 News NOW I-Team Trump will endorse Newt Gingrich.

According to Trump advisor Michael Cohen, “Donald J. Trump will be making a major announcement tomorrow at 12:30 p.m. at Trump International Hotel & Tower, Las Vegas, Nevada… The announcement will pertain to the Presidential race.”

Gingrich says he’s in the dark as to what Trump’s up to:

“I have no idea what The Donald is going to do,” Mr. Gingrich said. “He is always interesting, and I don’t know of anybody who does a better job of getting attention by announcing that he will presently announce something.”

How valuable would a Trump endorsement be for Gingrich? Trump’s not exactly a staunch conservative, and that’s the kind of support Gingrich needs right now — especially since Romney’s been saying things that move him to the center so much that Mitt’s in danger of being mistaken for a fulcrum.

Other possibilities: Trump will announce a third party run while pitching the new season of Celebrity Apprentice — or Trump might announce an endorsement of Romney while pitching the new season of Celebrity Apprentice. Trump might also pitch the next season of Celebrity Apprentice while announcing an endorsement for Rick Santorum or Ron Paul. Another possibility is that Trump will announce plans for a new show called “The GOP Candidate Apprentice” which will award a substantial donation to the campaign of the candidate who can most effectively promote Celebrity Apprentice.

Update: The AP is now reporting that Trump will endorse Romney… and promote Celebrity Apprentice, of course.

Update II: Yep, Romney it is. The continual media flip-flop provided a fitting lead-in.

    I don’t dislike Santorum,but I feel that on a lot of issues but not all, he won’t have the stomach to make the hard decisions on he budget, nor resist the temptation to mess-up the constitutional rights of Americans at home with or without a crisis. My immediate concern is that when push comes to shove, Santorum will cave and endorse Romney or Gingrich-and accomplish nothing at the convention,and from then on we will be demanded to vote for socialist 1 or socialist 2 in November.

    I also don’t necessarily buy Hot Air’s Ed Morissey’s argument that Rand Paul will act as a deterrent to Ron Paul going for broke and run an independent presidential campaign. After all, Sarah Palin wrapped herself around RINO John McCain from 2008 on, and the GOP still conpired to keep her pick for Alaska Senate, Joe Miller, a duly elected Republican for winning in favor of Murkowski anyhow. Given the Palin /Joe Miller experience, what incentive is there for Rand Paul to beleive he will not become a GOP-target anyway? In which case he can do as he pleases, and so could Ron Paul.

    The most important reason IMHO why a third party conservative run couldn’t work is if that candidate doesn’t have the fortitude to finish the job. If he/she has the vision and the stomach,however, victory under these particular political times is in fact doable.

    Just because the establishment seems to have made its decision does not mean that the people have. We are still in the primaries and the issues NEED to be discussed. Talking about people’s actions is no more a personal attack now than it is when discussing the democrats or any other person or party in politics.

    Try to relax a little maybe. Nobody here is attacking you personally but it is an important election and the consequences will very likely change the face of our nation. My personal concern is that there is very likely no chance that Obamacare” will be repealed and with all of the caveats and room for arbitrary interpretation there, that along could be enough to destroy our economy. Kinda important in my book whether or not you are (or anybody else is) bothered by me saying so. Please rest assured it is not a personal attack on anyone but the lesser of two evils can no longer be a viable choice for any of us if we wish our nation to survive.

I have supported candidates who have not been endorsed by some of the people I highly respect and many of them win. Being well known and highly respected does not in and of itself, assure wisdom. In fact, in some cases, it can be nothing more than a payoff, or a payback.

    Just let me know when that guy who used to spin plates on the “Ed Sullivan Show” announces his endorsement.

    Funny you should mention him…he was a business associate of my father back in the ’60′s and 70′s with whom we got together on occasion….gotta be in his 80′s if he’s still alive. If he is, I can ask. :)

    Santorum= Year of the Dog
    very acute sense of justice, fiercely loyal to family, frequently pessimistic, least materialistic (which is odd, because Trump is a Dog too).

    Romney= Year of the Pig
    friends to everyone, strong sense of luxury, down-to-earth, unstoppable force once he has made his mind up about something.

    Gingrich=Year of the Sheep
    altruistic, unassuming, extremely combative when in danger, can spend more than he makes, frequent romantic troubles.

    Paul has been a star on the House Financial Services Committee for years, practically the only sane voice of reason.
