Two years ago this month, as public debate over Obamacare raged, former President Bill Clinton rushed to the hospital because of a heart condition. He immediately underwent a procedure to place two stents in one of his coronary arteries. It was a timely reminder about the dangers of stifling private-sector medical innovation. No one listened.
Stents don’t grow on trees. They were not created, developed, marketed or sold by government bureaucrats and lawmakers. One of the nation’s top stent manufacturers, Boston Scientific, warned at the time that Obamacare’s punitive medical device tax would lead to worker losses and research cuts. The 2.3 percent excise tax, the company said, “would be very damaging to Boston Scientific, and the medical device industry as a whole. In a nutshell, it would raise costs and lead to significant job losses. It does not address the quality of care but the political scorecard of savings.”
Two years later, Bill Clinton’s doing just peachy. But many medical device manufacturers are suffering, and many more are preparing for the worst as the White House gears up to collect on an estimated $20 billion from the lifesaving industry. In typical Obama-transparent fashion, the Internal Revenue Service quietly released a complex thicket of medical device tax implementation rules in a Friday document dump earlier this month. Barring congressional intervention, the medical device tax will go into full effect in 2013.
Cook Medical, which manufactures products for everything from endovascular therapy, critical care medicine and general surgery, to diagnostic and interventional procedures, to bioengineered tissue replacement and regeneration, gastroenterology and endoscopy procedures, urology, and obstetrics and gynecology, has called for the levy’s repeal. Cook Group chairman Stephen Ferguson noted the tax burden amounted to a whopping 55 percent of its profits.
“For a company like ours, which pays 35 percent of our net earnings in federal corporate taxes and another 4 to 5 percent in state and local corporate taxes, the excise tax translates to another payment that will consume 15 percent more of our earnings,” he estimated. “This creates tremendous pressure for us to move manufacturing to Europe and other parts of the world.” According to the trade publication Mass Device, the company has already canceled plans to build a new factory in the U.S. because of the Obamacare tax burden.
Stryker, a maker of artificial hips and knees based in Kalamazoo, Mich., announced in November that it would slash 5 percent of its global workforce (an estimated 1,000 workers) this coming year to reduce costs related to Obamacare’s taxes and mandates.
Covidien, a N.Y.-based surgical supplies manufacturer, recently announced layoffs of 200 American workers and plans to move some of its plant work to Mexico and Costa Rica, in part because of the coming tax hit.
Mass.-based Zoll Medical Corp., which makes defibrillators and employs some 1,800 workers in the U.S. and around the world, says the medical device tax will cost the company between $5 million and $10 million a year. Its profit in 2009 was $9.5 million. “Running our company at close to break even would not be a sustainable position for us,” CEO Richard Packer said in a public statement, “so we will be forced to look at alternatives.”
Those “alternatives” include cutting payroll, cutting R and D and passing on the costs to patients, of course. Industry estimates put the tax-induced job losses at 43,000. So far, the number-crunchers at 1600 Pennsylvania are mum on the number of potential jobs — and lives — destroyed by the medical innovation death tax.
In fact, the Obama administration’s response so far has been a flippant shrug. Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner, whose only manufacturing claims to fame are faulty tax returns and near-double-digit unemployment figures, brushed off concerns this week about the medical device tax. Obamacare’s expanded access to health care, he argues blithely, will create more consumers for their products. “On balance, it is a good package for people in the health care business,” he told Bloomberg News.
Fewer jobs. Fewer entrepreneurs. Fewer medical advances. Only with a gallon of self-delusion does the Obamacare medical tax medicine amount to anything other than economic and medical malpractice.

I’m coming to the conclusion that large sectors of business and individual Americans must collaborate in taking down the Democrats and other statists behind this soft coup d’etat that we are witnessing. As I have said elsewhere, they have a long-standing divide-and-conquer strategy that seeks to isolate and polarize Americans against each other. Attacking medical device manufacturers, Catholic hospitals, Evangelical churches, extracting concessions from industry, is all part and parcel of their long-term strategy to secure total control.
As Benjamin Frankin admonished his fellow signators of the Declaration:

Nothing says el Presidenti better than killing a Republic, shredding the Consitution, and vacationing 365 days out of the year on taxpayers backs. The rest of us peasants can do without, eat cake, and freeze our unhuh off in the winters.

There are the most amazing medical advances and devices out there–I can’t think of one created by a gov’t agency. They save so many lives–strangely most are created in the USofA.
Was just talking to a diabetes pump rep–she said minimed lost millions trying to make a really cool device for diabetics–couldn’t make it work. But they are still working on lots of others–some just released. If they don’t make any extra money I doubt they will continue any R&D.
Thank you Mr.Obama. Obviously never worked in the medical field. Or any other field for that matter.

My wife was laid off from a urologist’s office. All the local medical offices have downsized and are not hiring. The worst she’s ever seen.
We have abortion on demand, contraception for everyone, “free” of charge, a hefty tax on medical devices, which means less R&D,I’m sure. Then there’s the $500 billion taken out of medicare. 30 million more on “free” healthcare, but not more doctors.
Sounds like population control and “death panels”. A dictators wet dream.
Unless Obamacare is utterly destroyed we are going to be like the old Soviet Union where for the first time in modern history, the life expectancy for people in a developed country actually dropped from 70 to 68 to 64.

Classic example proving that raising tax rates and imposing new taxes actually reduces net tax revenues. The taxes collected have no multiplier benefit to the economy. On the other hand, the jobs lost have a negative multiplier effect due to employment and other taxes not collected and spending curtailed which spirals into further job cuts and so on.
Wait until Rombama/Care replaces ObamaCare. I’m sure there will be a Lot of celebration but the carnage will continue.

I overheard a couple of the docs at the Military Hospital that I work at discussing this the other day. They pointed out that our wounded warriors are going to get screwed big on this. They will not pay the tax while in the military or treated by the VA, but the taxes will still affect them through the availability of the devices. As many of the companies that provide these devices go belly up, cut back on production and stop working towards innovation we will see our troops getting less and less of these state of the art devices.
Remember when Obama said that doctors treating diabetics would rather cut off the foot than treat the disease because it is more profitable? Well it looks like Obama and the Democrats would rather see our wounded warriors quality of life diminished to fufill the liberal utopia of government run healthcare.

So will all these new revenues be put in a lock box to be pulled out when the costs of providing even more free health care start coming in after 2014? Of course not. They are going into the general fund and will make the disastrous deficits appear slightly less disastrous for a couple of years. They will be squandered away and when the cost of the subsidies to pay for insurance policies for the poor, illegals and everybody that has been dropped by their employers yet more taxes will be required. Not to mention the various free clinics and other no-cost services that will be offered and will certainly come to light as this thing unfolds. And the cost of those policies and services will skyrocket far above anything that he administration lied about.
I used to think Obamacare would be that the final nail in the coffin that would be the push this country to financial ruin in 5 to 10 years. After reconsidering I must admit I’ve underestimated the Dems. It could easily be much sooner, say 2-3 years after this monstrosity starts kicking in over the next couple years. We could easily be facing final financial ruin by 2016 or 2017, far ahead of schedule. Dems exceeding expectations once again. They better move their travel plans up to escape the chaos that ensues.
Can’t help but recall how Sarah Palin was raked over the coals for mentioning “death panels” They are already hard at work and people are dying.

Inconvenient truth of the day.
The ability of government to dominate the republic as it has must be radically curtailed. Nothing more than a Cut/Cap/Balanced budget of 12% of GDP should be tolerated. And a third of that should be devoted to defense and national security.
Its regulatory responsibilities should be completely revamped to focus on financial fraud and reasonable and prudent environmental protection. Any anti-commerce regs and agencies should be eliminated. Government has to be returned to its proper constitutional role. It is totally corrupted now.
Was in my doctor’s office a few weeks ago listening to the back and forth between a very polite young lady and one of the counter people.
She was on some sort of medical assistance and their dialogue was about how Obamacare was going to give everyone the same level of care. That it was finally going to be fair.
That’s what this truly is about. Just because I went to war and college and then worked in my field for four decades is no reason for me to get better medical care than she does.
I don’t know her history but I’ll bet it doesn’t include service, college, or even an effort to get a decent job.
Her medical care costs me money as does my own but it’s not fair that mine might be better.

But even if they wish to, and I hope and expect most do, seriously, until either the Presidency or the Senate, or BOTH (!) change hands the House can only pick around the edges, and try to stop funding. Bills will never be even brought up in the Senate in 2012.

Fast forward 20 years. Michelle Obama is in the hospital suffering from a rare disease. She is on her death bed. The doctor sadly shakes his head and says:
“I’m so sorry Barack. We were on the verge of a cure for this very disease, but your regulations when you were POTUS became so overreaching, we ran out of funds and had to pull the plug on the research. Now, all we can do is watch her die”.
Obama: “Well, give her one of those pills. I have a 9:00 start time at the country club”.
Meanwhile, that DOE loan withheld from solar energy company Excelon has now been re-issued to First Solar which was just had a permit to complete the Antelope Valley CA project.
I’m sure that will work out…. for China and the crony investors who are probably related to Pelosi or ManBearPig.

Gov mandated insurance is the path to no health care at all. No doctors, nurses, hospitals, drugs or equipment. Lots of money will be saved to spend on gov programs…….. which will last till no one is left on the planet.
Things would be fine if the government “made a living”. Problem is, Obama’s government wants to “make a killing”.

..run THIS program:
1) Raise taxes on medical devices.
2) Raise premiums and fees, to cover.
3) Raise subsidies to ‘entitled’…
4) GoTo #1 (repeat)…for more revenue.

As usual, I did not scroll down far enough to read this before I posted the comment at #86. I am in full agreement with you on that. Since the unions are intertwined with the corrupt media, perhaps an argument can be made for both being the greatest threat to our freedom.
Doesn’t the abortion industry use medical devices? I’m guessing they will be humming along just fine with their subsidies from Barky to cover the medical device tax. Would not surprise me if they receive a waiver on the tax from Sebelius.
So, I think we are all in agreement about the top three things we need to expose as corrupt and needing to be stopped:
1. Mainstream media
2. Democrat party/far left
3. Unions
Now we need to get the word out as often and as clear as we can. These are what is destroying our country!!

Cuba really has solved the “problem” with their brilliant and humane (no!) income redistribution and Gulag prison system. Doctors make the same as taxi drivers–$25 bucks a month. The doctor’s patients have to provide their own medicines, dressings, etc.–if a family member in the U.S.A. sends them money to buy them. The taxi driver makes more money from foreign tourist tips as he drives them to beautiful resorts and beaches, and to visit the jineteras–pretty women who have to sell themselves to make a living and stay alive.

A dual Cuban money system where the ruling class can buy quality food and items in well stocked stores with the “convertible” peso. The peons have a different peso that can only be used in stores that do not have much of anything–like the old U.S.S.R.
