It Wouldn’t Be Saturday Morning Without Another Friday Night Solyndra Document Dump to Sift Through

By Doug Powers  •  February 18, 2012 09:52 AM

**Written by Doug Powers

The Energy and Commerce Committee has given the White House a deadline of next Tuesday to release documents related to Solyndra in eleven specified categories. Failure to do so could result in a contempt of Congress vote. According to the ECC, yesterday’s 463-page Solyndra doc dump included material from only one of the eleven categories.

In their cover letter to Republicans on the ECC, White House lawyers pointed out that once again these documents contained “no smoking guns” as far as evidence of political favoritism goes (their defense on the Solyndra debacle up to now seems to be “we’re not crooked, just irresponsible”). As with any partial release of records on the honor system, why would anybody expect the docs contain any smoking guns? That’s not to say there weren’t a couple items of interest:

White House emails released Friday added further evidence that concerns about the Energy Department loan guarantee program that benefited Solyndra had reached as high as President Barack Obama’s top economic adviser, Larry Summers, by early 2010.

References to Summers’s concerns turn up in a March 4, 2010, email exchange in which White House officials were second-guessing whether Obama should trumpet Solyndra’s exports to Australia during a planned visit later that month to the country.

And later, a poor private vs. public “investment” ratio is deemed to be worth not mentioning:

In the May 25 email exchange, Jared Bernstein wrote to Herbert Ziskend, one of Biden’s domestic policy advisers, “But do you have a leverage # for Solyndra — how much pvt cap [private capital] they raised off of the loan guarantee?”

Elizabeth Oxhorn, a press aide in Biden’s office, replied with the figure: “Solyndra raised $198m in private capital between selection in March 2009 and the loan closing in September 2009.”

Bernstein responded that the figure was not one he wanted to talk about with the press. “Weird — so leverage is like 2/5 ($198 m leverage against loan guarantee of $535m)… best not to go there,” he wrote.

The February 21st deadline will come and go, as other deadlines have. Part of the ECC’s mistake was requesting the material with a Tuesday deadline when the Document Dump Czar only works Friday afternoons. Levels of transparency this historic can’t be rushed and must occur just before the weekend in order to be fully appreciated.

Whenever a call goes out for more documents, and if they don’t provide them, there will be a contempt of Congress citation, I yawn. That threat no longer has any teeth. Is that the best threat they can come up with? If so, why don’t they follow through on it? If they follow through, what would be the penalty? Is there any consequence here? Or does it just sound official, but really isn’t? Why the he11 are they even bothering to make these “threats”? This administration doesn’t even feel threatened when judges make contempt charges. They ignore them and it just “goes away”. I want those in charge of these investigations to PUT UP OR STFU!

I am so sick of all this! Either they are stonewalling or they aren’t. If they are, slap some REAL penalites on them! Make it HURT, dang it!

Until then, I am going to just roll over and go back to sleep whenever I hear one of these hollow threats, so typical of a do-nothing Congress.

I don’t believe the government cleaners should be allowed to “preview” the documents before they copy them to send to the committees. They can cc themselves, but reviewing the documents ahead of time allows them all kinds of opportunity to obfuscate, and hide other pertinent documents/evidence.

I sure hope there are chains of evidence being observed, and cataloged for the committees. We need to know who has looked at, and handled these documents.

But if “Boo-Hoo” Boehner and his “reach across the aisle” House RINO Posse would “cowboy up” and issue subpoenas for the Solyndra management and financial people and records they could light up The Good Comrade and His “greenie” Ilk. Put them under oath, issue immunity to a few of them with real insider knowledge of the crimes to compel their testimony when the 5th. Amendment is invoked. The American Pravda Media won’t be able to hide the corruption with C-Span reporting on the hearings and following court actions.

Speaking of “green” energy cronyism I saw this:

Jim Rogers, the co-chairman and lead fundraiser for the Democratic National Convention host-committee, is well versed in the art of political cronyism.
Just as Rogers has helped fund Democratic politicians, they, in turn, have helped steer massive amounts of federal funding to Duke Energy. The 2009 stimulus package, for instance, was a boon for the company: Duke received federal grants totaling $230.4 million for a number of “green” energy projects including “smart grid” development and wind energy storage.

According to Recovery.gov, Duke created 196.6 jobs as a result of the grants.

The company also received a $350,000 grant to assist General Motors in the development of the Chevrolet Volt, the poorly selling electric vehicle that the Obama administration has recently proposed subsidizing at a rate of $10,000 per car.

Rogers’ support for the president’s “green” agenda earned him a spot on the short list to become President Obama’s Energy Secretary.

Though headquartered in Charlotte, Duke maintains an active presence in Washington, D.C., having spent more than $26 million lobbying the federal government on energy-related issues since 2007.

In 2009, the company enlisted the services of the Podesta Group, a lobbying firm founded by John Podesta, the former president of the Center for American Progress and co-chairman of the Obama-Biden transition team, and his brother Tony Podesta. Since then, Duke Energy has paid the firm $860,000 to lobby to “support the passage of climate change and energy legislation” and “energy efficiency and clean energy solutions,” according to a database maintained by the Senate Office of Public Records.

Earlier this week, Hank (pronounced “Honk” if your name is Christine Lagard… but I digress) Paulson was interviewed on CNBC and asked if he had second thoughts about the bank bailouts. In his response, he pointed out that there was a poll right after the bailouts were announced that showed that more than 90% were against the bailouts which compared to 63% which were against torture.

People just don’t like corruption. We can’t count on “our” corrupt politicians to expose “their” corrupt politicians. It just isn’t going to happen. It’s the “There but for the grace of God go I” problem.

I wonder if Upton is like Boehner making money from stocks bought using inside information prior to congress using tax money to provide a bailout like Buffet did with his bank stocks.

The more I think of the 3.9 billion he made from that the more it Pi$$es me off.

Buy millions of shares in several banks, then push Urkel and congress for a bank bailout, while schlepping his secretary around whining about her tax rate….while making billions off the stock after the bailout.

Same thing with his railroad. Buy it, then push Urkel and congress to spend billions on rail infrastructure.

While normal citizens saw their stocks and retirement plans tank.

With Boehner lined up at the trough with the rest of the pigs, nothing will happen with this.

Any contempt of congress vote would likely be an up or down vote on whether congress continues to allow themselves to be treated with contempt.

    Boehner badly needs a primary!

No sooner would one trader caravan pull out of the oasis, merchants wagered on what the next would ‘bring’? Would they be short on dates, or flush with figs? A system had to be devised!

Speculation is a dirty word even though every time you commit to the future (which is what investing is), you are speculating on an outcome and taking risks.

We have been systematically dumbed down by the product-driven banks, wirehouses and insurance companies to being so risk-averse that no one makes money except the crooks at the top. So most investors follow the crowd do the wrong things at the wrong time over and over again.

We need to return to Glass-Steagall and standardized accounting principles and allow the brokerage industry to be diversified again into independent boutique brokers.
