Gallup: Unemployment Climbing Back to 9% for February

By Doug Powers  •  February 21, 2012 02:56 PM

One of the many challenges for Team Obama this year is to try and lower expectations from 2008′s “yes we can” down to a slightly more reality-based “re-elect me and I’ll try and get you your house back.” The motivation for doing so comes with the knowledge that, no matter how much lip service is paid to “economic recovery” or how the media helps do the spin, it just doesn’t seem to be happening — at least not at a pace fast enough to keep Obama from having to move back to Chicago next January.

From CNS News:

Unemployment in the U.S. rose to nine percent in mid-February, up from 8.3 percent a month earlier, according to a new Gallup survey. The polling company said this suggests that it is “premature” to assume the economy will not feature prominently in the 2012 election season.

Gallup figures typically provide an indication of what the government will report at the end of the month.

“The U.S. unemployment rate, as measured by Gallup without seasonal adjustment, is 9.0% in mid-February,” Gallup said in its mid-month unemployment survey, released on February 17. “The mid-month reading normally reflects what the U.S. government reports for the entire month, and is up from 8.3% in mid-January.”

Couple this with the outlook for gas prices this year and Obama risks seeing what’s left of his favorability crumble like peanut brittle in Michael Moore’s back pocket.

And then there’s this addendum from Gallup:

“Regardless of what the government reports, Gallup’s unemployment and underemployment measures show a sharp deterioration in job market conditions since mid-January.”

It’s almost as if Gallup expects the government to go extra overboard massaging and spinning the numbers as the election closes in. They wouldn’t do that, would they?

Of course. Left out are those whose unemployment benefits have expired, people who are marginally employed, part-time, those not eligible for unemployment, can’t find a job and have given up.

Double that 9% and it would still be an under-count, nationally.

Take a look at the Employment-population ratio for those 16 years and over.

When Republicans turned over majority control to the Democrats, at the beginning of January 2007,
the December 2006 numbers show that 63.4% of the Age 16+ population was employed.

After just three years of majority Democrat control,
the December 2009 numbers show that number had dropped to 58.2%, and has not really improved over the last 2+ years!

The highest it reached in the last two years was 58.7%, and it’s currently back down to 58.5%.

We’re down around 5 points (and on a percentage basis, we’re down 8.2% (58.2%/63.4%)) from when the balance of power shifted to Democrats, and we’ve stagnated at the bottom for 2+ years without any recovery.

I think this is a prime reason we need to repeal the 17th amendment regarding the election of senators. The general election of senators neutralizes the power of the states and plays into the hands of those with communist sensibilities. There is a reason they call the House of Representatives “The Peoples’ house”. The Senate should be focused solely on the interests of their respective states.

We have nothing else to offer: Santorum, Romney? Oh, please. Santorum, BTW, appears to have peaked — sorry, folks — so that once again Romney will emerge on top with only Gingrich left remaining as our last hope. Or Jebidiah Beauregard Bush III (I know, not his real name, but I like my made up one much better) rides to the rescue.

It’s enough to make a saint swear. Sheesh.

The other part of the Gallup article is that underemployment is up to 19%.

I’ve also heard housing values have gone done 33% since 2009, and the percentage of homeowners has gone down to the lowest level since the early 1960s.

Oh, wait. Some things are up. Like gas prices, and food costs, and foreclosures.

Yeah, Obama is a Progressive – Progressively Downward for all of us.

beenthere – Santorum has peaked??? I think you’re a Lib plant to spread pessimism among us Conservatives/Repubs/Tea-Partiers/Evangelicals (all of which I am). Santorum is ahead, perhaps slightly in Michigan, and is only a bit behind in Arizona.

Regardless, if Santorum, Romney or anybody else is the GOP candidate, we will support him/her 100% – Obama is an Abomination (Obamanation, so to speak.) He is ripe for removal.

I think if we nominate even a ham sandwich, we can win the election.

But I prefer Santorum to Romney or a ham sandwich.

So if the Feb U3 cooked unemployment rate is going from 8.3 to 9%, then that would put the U6 real unemployment rate up from 15.1 to 15.8%.

    And those are the facts.

I don’t trust anything from them at this point. I believe that if counted accurately, the U3 would be 10-12% and the U6 somewhere between 20-25%.

And then there’s this addendum from Gallup:

“Regardless of what the government reports, Gallup’s unemployment and underemployment measures show a sharp deterioration in job market conditions since mid-January.”

While I applaud Gallup for not running the usual Marxstream Media lie that the employment outlook is improving, their statement is still misleading and is sugarcoating the real conditions. There has been a sharp deterioration in job market conditions since mid-January? No, there hasn’t. Some people who worked in retail outlets during November and December were let go after the holidays just the same as any other year.

The sharp deterioration in job market conditions started January 20, 2009, when a guy who was elected on a platform of transforming America took office. He’s lived up to that promise every day since. No business owner is going to hire someone in the current situation unless it’s absolutely necessary to keep the doors open because Obama has introduced FUD (fear, uncertainty, and doubt) as the standard operating procedure in the marketplace.

People without jobs aren’t getting hired and the government is cooking the books to reduce the unemployment rate by defining someone as unemployed only if they have looked for work in the last 4 weeks. The real unemployment rate when you include all people actually unemployed, plus people working part-time who want a full-time job, is north of 20%. And that’s not the whole story. Most of the jobs being created now are entry-level with no career path for meaningful raises and promotions that permit people to make real progress (not just keep up with inflation) throughout their working careers. All but a few people in the 25 – 40 age bracket who have jobs will never see the type of earning potential over a working career that existed in the 70′s, 80′s, and 90′s. I’m at the tail end of my working career, and I’m sad for those now entering the workforce or just a few years in. Today, there is nothing even close to the job market conditions that used to exist for the broad spectrum of workers. So Gallup is still not being truthful about the real situation when they talk about a one-month deterioration. As if there is a likelihood that in another month, we will all be singing Happy Days Are Here Again. We won’t be.

And no doubt deflower the wives and daughters of right-wingers everywhere. If I’m sufficient to demoralize the forces of all that is good and pure, the Right really is in trouble.

As for walking all over Obama come this November, get real. Obama has a billion dollar war chest, a divided and confused opposition, and not to mention a united party behind him that has overseen a huge growth in entitlements and dependency. I think all those will aid his efforts this coming election day. Barring a miracle, the only question is how big Obama’s landslide will be.

I am wondering why the unemployment rate is based on the number of people collecting benefits, rather then the number who have no jobs? It should be called the jobless rate, rather then the unemployment rate. Inclusive of those who are suffering mental anguish and are applying for and/or are receiving SSI, along with the parasitic junkies who have been receiving it for years.

So, my fellow Americans, “Who ya gonna vote for, me, who is giving you everything for nothing, or the other guy, who wants to take it away” ?

HI REDDOG–#24. Yes–gutting our Army and Air Force will hurt the U.S.A. bigtime. Only 100 first line fighter planes will make it impossible to defend our country at home–let alone to project power overseas.

But these cuts pale in comparison to Comrade Obama’s plan to scrap 80 percent of our deployable nuclear bombs and warheads. Already in service and paid for. Without any “gains” of givebacks in reducing the size of our enemies nuclear arsenals.

WWTMCD? works for me. What Would The Manchurian Candidate Do works for me. And it will cause the deaths of millions of deaths of draftees if we ever get into a real shooting war somewhere. We should be using the old Canadian Mountie rule, “Never send a man where you can send a bullet!”. Or a sub launched missile with a lot of nukes on board.
