Obama to Speak About Gas Prices Thursday

By Doug Powers  •  February 22, 2012 05:05 AM

**Written by Doug Powers

Unless President Obama opens Thursday’s gas prices address by announcing he’s going to put a Master Lock on the door of the EPA’s offices (better chance Team Biden will win a geographic spelling bee in Road Island), I’ll be skeptical about any other suggested solutions:

President Barack Obama plans to step into the political debate over rising gasoline prices on Thursday, when he kicks off the first of a series of events focused on his energy plans, senior administration officials said.

During an event at the University of Miami, Mr. Obama will discuss the steps the country can take to tackle what the White House sees as an annual cycle of spikes in gas prices, the officials said. At the same time, these officials, who briefed reporters Tuesday on the president’s plans, acknowledged that there is almost nothing the president can do in the near term to lower gas prices.

But rising gas prices are a threat to the president as he runs for re-election this year. It’s one of the issues of chief concern to Mr. Obama’s political advisers and has become the subject of criticism of Mr. Obama on the campaign trail.

Mr. Obama’s speech Thursday will call for a diverse energy plan and lay out his efforts to boost domestic production of oil and gas.

To save you some time, here’s Obama’s gas price speech in about 50 words: “Payroll tax cut to help families cover the rising fuel cost that’s a sign of economic recovery. Increase domestic energy output tempered by environmental sensitivity. No quick fixes. Buy Chevy Volts. Republicans playing politics. Remember global warming. More clean energy initiatives. Trade in your gas guzzler. Trouble with Iran.”

Pulling out a humdinger of a suggested solution from the past, Obama will once again claim that it’s a simple matter of frequent engine tune-ups and keeping your tires properly inflated.

At the same time, these officials, who briefed reporters Tuesday on the president’s plans, acknowledged that there is almost nothing the president can do in the near term to lower gas prices.

My, how things have changed from the last time gas prices exceeded $4 dollars a gallon. In 2008, when Bush was president, he and Cheney (eeeee-ville “oil men”) were solely responsible for high gas prices as they were obviously in on the plot to hand their partners in crime in the oil industry a windfall. At that time, leftist officials put the job of fixing the problem squarely on Bush’s shoulders. Now, according to these same officials, there is nothing the POTUS can do in this situation. Uh, yes, there is. Remove the restrictions in drilling in the Gulf of Mexico, in ANWAR, and elsewhere in the US where new deposits have been found in recent years. Stop funnelling tax-payer money into worthless “green” energy projects. Announce that global warming is a scam and cap-and-trade schemes have no place in a plan to make America energy independent. There is plenty that Obozo can do that will result in lower gas prices and he will do none of it.

I’ve written about this before. Simple things done right will drop the gas prices faster than a bad transmission:

    1. Unlock the permits to start drilling — NOW! That will cause OPEC nations to run scared and drop prices pronto.
    2. Nuclear energy. Enlist the help of the US Navy. Cheap energy, clean energy, and the ONE European policy we should emulate.
    3. Build more refineries — YESTERDAY!
    4. Simplify the number of blends of fuel to one for winter and one for summer across the entire nation. We have more “blends” than we have states. And when a refinery changes the blend of gas they make, they have to shut down and re-calibrate. Very costly.
    5. Tell the environmentalists (the real ones who actually care about the environment rather than destroying capitalism) to sit down and negotiate in good faith or the talks end right then and there.

You do all that, and gas will be $1 a gallon in a year.

You know Obama cannot have a speech without blaming someone, talking about some greedy rich person not paying their fair share and trying to show that he cares about the middle class.

He is going to suggest that people try to fart into their gas tanks as much as possible. If we do that, our cars will go an extra 6 inches per fart. And, since your family dawg is responsible for most of the farts, train him to let you know when he needs to fart and you can get him out there! Ha!!! I have that same thought every time I see him bounce down those stairs. I hope for him to trip and fall. I don’t want him hurt, just embarrassed. He never seems to get embarrassed. Just once, I want to see it!! And those limp wrists are hilarious! Why doesn’t someone ever show him video of what he looks like? Or does he think it is somehow “cool”? I guess someone who wears mommy jeans and rides a girl’s bike really is that detached from reality.

Actually, they show it a lot! They just don’t think he looks stupid because they are in love with him. I just think his “handlers” need to point this out to him and tell him to try not to flop those stupid wrists around like a freaking idiot. But then, anyone who is under Obama’s spell doesn’t see it.

Thanks to Cash For Clunkers, the value is rising.

Mitt Romney out there saying stupid things again. He is making Rush quite upset! Something about taxes, but I missed it.

Romney seems a bit desperate to me. Whenever I see him, he seems to be reaching and stretching and not being sincere. He knows he has to show passion so he is faking it. I am having a hard time even watching him any more. He seems phoney to me.

I will be watching the debate tonight. And making my decision based on it. Then, I will send money to whoever convinces me he is sincere and rational. By the way, Ron Paul is sincere, but he is not rational. Sorry RC.

Romney pretty much pulled an Obama line on taxes. He said that he wants to reduce the tax rate by 20%, but keep the taxes higher on those who earn the most. Paraphrasing, but that is the basics of it.

Romney is definitely NOT a Conservative! I have heard too many comments by him that have made me very uncomfortable. And his romneycare and flip-flopping makes him a very bad candidate!! I am praying he makes an arse of himself tonight and puts the final nail in.

Pray for Santorum to do an amazing job tonight!! Debates are important!

Nothing Obama does before the election will have any effect on gas prices except to increase them. The oil companies and investors are not stupid, they all know any changes Obama makes to allow more exploration, leases or drilling will be reversed if he wins the election, with even further restrictions likely. Obama has also said many times he wants to remove the “tax breaks” given to the oil industry, which as we all know would cause prices to go up. I am totally dumbfounded at the number of people that think corporations pay taxes. GET A GRIP PEOPLE WE NOT ONLY PAY THE TAX IN INCREASED PRICES BUT ALSO THE HIGH COST OF TAX LAW COMPLIANCE! Congress needs to grow some balls and get rid of all the hidden taxes and tax the people directly so we all know how much we really pay. If they do that, you better believe government spending would be dramatically cut almost instantly.

…Mr.

Steps the President can take immediately to lower gas prices:

    -Approve Keystone XL
-End all moratoria on domestic drilling
-Encourage construction of new refineries (and stop EPA stonewalling of said refineries)

All of these steps, while they may not produce a drop of oil or gas for years, will demonstrate America’s willingness to take the necessary steps to reduce our dependence on Middle Eastern oil. That will cause prices to drop immediately.

The price will be over $4 by the end of February ($3.69 TODAY). We will likely see $5 by Memorial Day as every year the “summer driving season” starts a month earlier. And 0bama will tout (correctly) that US oil production is actually UP over previous years and try to take credit for it. What he WON’T say is that all of the increases are coming from PRIVATELY owned land and extraction efforts (the evil free market). All of our PUBLIC lands are still in lockdown by 0bama’s federal government. Don’t let 0bama or any of his mindless drones lie about this. These people believe in “peak oil” and hate all things carbon and will try to tell you that man left the stone age because we ran out of rocks (or because they artificially inflated the price of rocks: “Under my plan rock prices would necessarily skyrocket“) They will tell you that Keystone XL would not do anything for American oil prices (Really? Moving oil more cost-effectively for distribution in a GLOBAL commodities market won’t have an impact on the price Americans pay? Really?) We have oil, natural gas, & coal to provide america with INEXPENSIVE energy for centuries. Tell everyone you know the truth!

Unaffordable energy is NOT energy “independence”…
