Breaking: Olympia Snowe not seeking re-election

By Michelle Malkin  •  February 28, 2012 05:14 PM

What do I keep tellin’ ya? Entrenched incumbency is the disease. Fresh blood is the cure. GOP Sen. Olympia Snowe reads the tea leaves and decides it’s time for her to go. On her own:

The Portland Maine Press Herald reports:

In a statement issued by her campaign, Snowe said that both she and her husband, former Gov. John R. McKernan, are both in good health and she is certain she would have won re-election.

Snowe, however, cited frustation over “an atmosphere of polarization and ‘my way or the highway’ ideologies has become pervasive in campaigns and in our governing institutions.”

All together now: DLTDHYOTWO!

The Maine GOP Senate race will be…interesting to say the least:

A primary challenger to U.S. Sen. Olympia Snowe and a self-proclaimed tea partier has unenrolled from the Republican party in the wake of the state GOP’s recent caucuses.

Andrew Ian Dodge of Harpswell announced on Tuesday that he was severing ties with his party but said he plans to remain in the Senate race as an independent.

Dodge told the liberal website Talking Point Memo that the Maine Republican Party’s handling of its recent presidential caucuses was the last straw.

The Maine GOP has been criticized for declaring Mitt Romney the winner of a presidential preference poll on Feb. 11 before all the results were gathered.

The party also later admitted to clerical errors that resulted in some communities being omitted from the results. Among those errors were that some results that were emailed to the party ended up in the spam folder.

The Maine GOP has made amends by updating those results, but there is still some animosity that could generate discussion at the next state committee meeting on March 10. The Waldo County Republicans last week recommended a censure of party Chairman Charlie Webster.

Dodge was particularly critical of Webster in his comments.

“Webster patronized and belittled members of his own party to save his own skin. And his excuse the results were in the ‘spam folder’ … well, that is so bad it’s beyond comment,” Dodge told Talking Points Memo. “I have no idea whether it is because of corruption or ineptitude

but the handling of it made it worse and made it look like it was corruption.”

With Dodge out of the Republican race, Scott D’Amboise of Lisbon Falls is the sole GOP challenger to Snowe.

Of course Snowe would say that she would win re-election, but I think she would carry the Northeast pragmatic vote that in hard-core liberal times and dire financial ruin that breaks to the right.

I do like Scott D’Ambroise, but I wonder if he could beat a democrat in such a blue state.

Right now, even with this seat open, I think the republicans have about 10 seats they can win back, possibly as high as 13 or 14, but realistically 8-10.

This seat and the Brown seat are the only ones the dems have a real shot at.

    Likley pick-ups:

    North Dakota
    Nebraska
    Montana
    Wisconsin
    Florida

    Can win:

    Virginia
    New Mexico
    Ohio
    Missouri
    Michigan
    West Virginia

    Interesting possibilities:

    Minnesota
    Maryland
    Connecticut
    Rhode Island
    Pennsylvania
    Washington State

All Democrat politicians are fully aware of the coming financial meltdown due to their votes and RINO accomplices. These RINO’s work hand in hand with the Democrats on almost every issue. Wall Street insider information can also give them insight on a financial collapse. Many wealthy Wall Street employees are buying property far from the East coast, well into the rural heartland. Anonymously placing their properties under business names. I think many of them will use a holiday weekend as cover to bail ship prior to a meltdown. Or use a mandatory stoppage of trading to take off. A cooling off period when stocks drop below a certain percentage.

I work with manufacturers of every type. 9-11 ruined my business and it caused bankruptcies with 40% of my base customers. I’ve been seeing a steady closing of plants since 2007. Domestic customers have moved to Mexico and Asian nations overseas. Most of my recent domestic customers have been wind turbine companies and government agencies. A total 180 degree flip.

RINO Snowe doesn’t want to be associated with a financial meltdown. Out of site, out of mind. I don’t trust any Republican politician on the East Coast. We’ve already been destroyed by Scott Brown of Assachusetts. They have no conservative spine on that side of the country. Bunch of octopus.

Sorry to say, but I doubt that one will be in play for two reasons.

    1. Patty Murray sailed to re-election in 2010 which tells you alot about the population of WA ST.

    2. No one has even decided to run againt Maria Cant(do)well as of yet, and most of the names being floated are not that promising.

My guess, someone will run against Cant(do)well just so there is a name on the ballot, but there really will not be much of a campaign and virtually no money will be spent on a campaign.

That said, Sen. So don’t think she is talking about republicans here, I have heard from people that even democrats don’t know why they don’t meet and do something. No one can introduce anything, no progress can be made, some of the senators just go to the gym and sit in their offices when they are there, it is really unhealthy.

I would be surprised—in a good way— if we won any of those states, True soldier. The reality is Maryland and Minnesota went to Carter in 1980, but the marriage issue is making a lot of democrats (especially in Maryland) fuming mad at the left. You should see the support rallies for traditional marriage in Annapolis or how many democrats in Keith Ellison’s district will cast their vote in favor of traditional marriage.

It’s less clear to me how it will impact WA Senate race, but I think you’re right on the name recognition.

I just think that if we work hard and get some good grassroots, we can really empty the DNC coffers. The left is hellbent on recalling Walker and keeping Giffords’s seat, and the arrogance of incumbency that pollutes the air around the Administration and relatively safe legislative incumbents like Pelosi is lost especially on Senators.

The best thing ever for us would be make them feel like no one is safe from being tossed out, and trust me, a lot of democrats and rinos are feeling the heat.

And remember: Every single cent spent on Walker or the Senate is one less for Barack Hussein Obama and Joesph Biden.

Michelle Malkin obviously knows nothing about Maine politics and thinks this is somehow a credit to the power of the Tea Party. *PalmtoForehead*. This is the state of MAINE. Snowe got 74% of the vote in Maine in her last election and politics up there is very liberal. No tea party was even running a primary candidate against her for good reason – she would be tough to beat with her cash flow. The only people who can win up there are moderate Republicans. Now this state will definitely tilt to the Democrats, assuming a Tea Party or very conservative Republican runs.

Yep, 2004. Even if you do not count all the “lost” and “received too late” military ballots from those of us who were in Iraq in 2004 you still have the nearly 2000 illegal votes that gave her the win (after two recounts paid for by the union and the tribes).

It just blows my mind that WA has been so totally overrun with these people, but it is like a cancer. Conservative Dems of my parents era certainly would not have countenanced this. It demonstrates what the Democratic party has evolved into – The Communist Party. Oregon and WA will become California if the model is followed.

    1) If Scott Brown can mop the floor in MA, anything’s possible. I’d even be careful were I Akaka or Leahy.

    2) The TEA PARTY was not around in 2006 when Snowe last got elected. I’m convinced that national pressure from the TEA PARTY is forcing a lot of liberal and RINOs to retire from office.

Downplay the TEA PARTY at your own risk, because I PROMISE you every single incumbent, even the Hawaiian senators and Patrick Leahy, are watching what we do with care and concern.

    3) Obviously, you’re missing the entire point of the conversation on here. We don’t care if a conservative is run in the northeast and loses because we’re trying to purify the republican party.

I was fine with the O’Donnell loss to the “avowed Marxist” Coons who seemingly bases his life soley on an abroad Kenyan college trip that “changed him”.

I’d be VERY interested to see how much he’s given over the years to help them.

About 92% of the counties in WA and OR have their head screwed on straight. They pretty much have the same dilemma as the Midwest with the rapidly decaying urban culture and landscape pulling everyone else into their black hole of liberalism.

Take away Seattle-Tacoma or Portland and see what you have.

Amen to THAT, brother. Just one natural disaster or interruption to the food supply and they will come boiling out of their socialist hives like termites. Unfortunately for them, the 90% of the state that is full of conservatives that they have taxed and demeaned for 40 years will not be happy to see them. Akaka is retiring. Mazie Hirono is his designated replacement here in the People’s Plantation. Linda Lingle is running as the RINO. The Chamber of Commerce TV ads say she has pledged to work with Obama. Not Hirono, Lingle. She would still be an improvement – that’s how bad it is here. But Inouye has given his blessing to Hirono, so, (cue the theme from the Godfather) most likely she wins.

The population density in those 92% of counties must be super low to allow the shysters to maintain power. My wife loves Grays Anatomy. I hate seeing the Seattle skyline declaring a Leftist symbol of their “Cordoba initiative”.

HI, MI, CA, NY, MD and others. Dry up their access to the Federal teat and the facade of Socialism collapses. The sooner the better. HI is especially sensitive. It is not much different than Guam only with more tourism.

This is precisely why the Dems are destroying the defense budget (the only true constitutionally-supported federal mandate). The entitlement zombies are still too powerful to stand up against.

Sorry but they choose to live in blue states and thus that is why most of the tax burden comes from there. Nice try though.

Having a republican from Massachusetts (I love saying that) would be like the democrats having a Senate seat from Utah or Oklahoma.

Tell me which is more likely–A dem win in one of those two states, or Brown keeping his seat?

He’s voted like a Democrat. It’s why his Tea Party support has gone up in flames and he’ll be smoked by Elizabeth Warren.

Brown currently leads in the polls and is still near 50% and was leading all other challengers except Kennedy by double-digits.
