John McCain: GOP Should Avoid the Contraception Issue

The Republican nominee from 2008 has some advice for the party that helps shine a light on part of the reason why he’s “the Republican nominee from 2008″ and not president. Weighing in on the argument over the contraception mandate, John McCain has a piece of advice for the GOP: Let it go — concede the issue and move on:
Sen. John McCain said Sunday that the GOP needs to stop talking about contraception and that focusing on the issue is hurting voter perceptions of the party.
“I think we have to fix that,” the Arizona Republican said when asked by David Gregory on NBC’s “Meet the Press” about the idea of a Republican “war on women.” “I think there is a perception out there because of the way this whole contraception issue played out – we need to get off of that issue in my view. I think we ought to respect the right of women to make choices in their lives and make that clear — and get back onto what the American people really care about: jobs and the economy.”
Any Republican who takes the bait like McCain and accepts the premise of the other side’s talking points should let the issue go.
If McCain thinks Republicans should drop it, he should have a chat with his fellow middle-of-the-aisle Senator Scott Brown:
“I see that both Newt Gingrich and Rick Santorum now have Secret Service with them on the campaign trail,” Brown joked during a traditional St. Patrick’s Day breakfast in Boston. “And in Santorum’s case, I think it’s the first time he’s actually ever used protection.”

So far the RNC is not heeding McCain’s advice. Last week the Republicans put out a video that says, “okay, fine, let’s talk about a ‘war on women’”:
