Liberal Democrats are lamenting Richard Lugar’s primary loss yesterday. Something tells me this should have happened a long time ago.

Here’s John Kerry as quoted in The Hill:

“This is a tragedy for the Senate and the loss is particularly felt by all of us who have been privileged to serve with Dick on the Foreign Relations Committee.”
[...]
“It will soon almost sound cliched to say that America is safer today because of Dick Lugar’s 36 years of service in the Senate, but it really does bear repeating,” Kerry said. “This is a tough period in American politics, but I’d like to think that we’ll again see a United States Senate where Dick Lugar’s brand of thoughtful, mature, and bi-partisan work is respected and rewarded. That kind of seriousness of purpose should never go out of fashion.”

President Obama:

“While Dick and I didn’t always agree on everything, I found during my time in the Senate that he was often willing to reach across the aisle and get things done,” Obama said.

Joe Biden still had his foot stuck in his mouth as of yesterday evening so his office took to Twitter instead:

“The Senate lost a brilliant strategic mind, a man with absolute integrity.”

Appearing on CNN this morning, Richard Mourdock, who defeated Lugar yesterday, didn’t close the door to the idea of working with Democrats if he wins in November. As a matter of fact, Mourdock welcomed the notion of bipartisanship — it’s just that there’s a catch the Dems might not like: Mourdock said bipartisanship should be Democrats joining Republicans to roll back size of government.
