It’s a tradition that’s been a staple in presidential contests going back to the Lincoln/Douglas debates:

But for some reason this year the Commission on Presidential Debates disallowed the use of teleprompters at the debates — President Obama hardest hit.
Obama supporters were asked if this was unfair:
In addition to allowing teleprompters, a frustrated Chris Matthews is lobbying the debate commission to include “50/50″ and “phone-a-friend” options as well.
