Yesterday, news of the resignation of CIA Director David Petraeus caught almost everyone by surprise, if not for the resignation itself, for the reason. The CIA reportedly said that as a result, Petraeus wouldn’t be testifying next week at the Benghazi hearings, and that CIA Deputy Director Mike Morell would testify in his place (if having an affair earns one a “get out of congressional hearing testimony free” card that might explain why the practice has proven so popular in Congress throughout our nation’s history).

Not so fast on the CIA’s offer of a replacement witness, according to South Carolina GOP Rep. Trey Gowdy:

“The fact that he’s resigned and had an affair has nothing to do with whether he will be subpoenaed to Congress. I hope we don’t have to subpoena a four star general and a former CIA director. I would hope he would come voluntarily but if he won’t he will be subpoenaed. And none of what happened today is an offense to a subpoena… He’s either a witness in our case in chief or he’s gonna be a rebuttal witness if Susan Rice and others blame him for their failure of intelligence and failure of information. But there is no way we can get to the bottom of Benghazi without David Petraeus.”

Rep. Peter King echoed that and said Petraeus is an “absolutely necessary witness” at the Benghazi hearing(s):

Ed Morrissey at Hot Air has a possible answer as to what the FBI was doing investigating the head of the CIA.

Other questions remain.

Meanwhile, true to form, the New York Post is all over it:

null

Update: Wouldn’t be surprised to see a few more stops added to Hillary’s itinerary for the rest of the year on top of those already scheduled:

The Republican-led House Foreign Affairs Committee asked Secretary of State Hillary Clinton to testify at an open hearing next week about the Sept. 11 attacks in Benghazi, Libya.

While the State Department responded that Clinton will be traveling abroad next week, the invitation to the Nov. 15 hearing signaled a post-election renewal of a politically charged debate over the attack resulted in the death of U.S. Ambassador Chris Stevens and three other Americans.
[...]
Clinton is scheduled to travel next week to Australia, Singapore, Thailand, Burma and Cambodia.
