According to an article in the Washington Post, Sen. John Kerry — yes, this one — is reportedly under consideration to be the next defense secretary. Additionally, the Post reports that Susan Rice is under consideration for the position of “secretary of blaming terrorist attacks on YouTube videos”:
President Obama is considering asking Sen. John F. Kerry (D-Mass.) to serve as his next defense secretary, part of an extensive rearrangement of his national security team that will include a permanent replacement for former CIA director David H. Petraeus.
Although Kerry is thought to covet the job of secretary of state, senior administration officials familiar with the transition planning said that nomination will almost certainly go to Susan E. Rice, the U.S. ambassador to the United Nations.
The Dems concern about choosing Kerry for either SecState or SecDef is this:
The chances of another early favorite, Senate Foreign Relations Committee Chairman John Kerry, are hampered by Democrats’ fear that Republican Scott Brown, who lost his Massachusetts Senate seat Tuesday, could win Kerry’s seat in a race to replace him.
Don’t count out Scott Brown on another Senate run, because he learned his lesson after last week’s election defeat and next time will enter the race only after claiming to be 1/64th Potawatomi.
According to the AP, Jon Huntsman is also in the pool of names as possible replacements for Hillary at State — and having written notes to Obama like this, why wouldn’t he be? Campaign trail criticism from a short-lived presidential canidate quickly fades, but political love letters like that leave a lifetime impression.
And of course the list of secretary of state possibilities also includes John Kerry.
Regarding the possibility of a Secretary of Defense John Kerry, Rick Moran adds: “Actually, as a Senator who voted against every major weapons system over the last 25 years, he’d be perfect for overseeing our military, don’t you think?”
