This pretty much amounts to an empty threat, because no matter what happens, Obama will blame Republicans anyway.

Negotiations reportedly came to a standstill after Boehner proposed increasing the tax rate on top earners:

Mr. Obama repeatedly lost patience with the speaker as negotiations faltered. In an Oval Office meeting last week, he told Mr. Boehner that if the sides didn’t reach agreement, he would use his inaugural address and his State of the Union speech to tell the country the Republicans were at fault.

At one point, according to notes taken by a participant, Mr. Boehner told the president, “I put $800 billion [in tax revenue] on the table. What do I get for that?”

“You get nothing,” the president said. “I get that for free.”

According to Politico, Obama was referring to Rep. Tom Cole (R-Okla.) and Senate Republicans who had already said they would be open to tax rate increases and therefore he didn’t need to concede anything.

“I get that for free” — five words that will define this political epoch for future generations.

On Fox News Sunday this morning Wyoming Republican Senator John Barrasso said Obama sees a political victory at the bottom of the cliff:

“He gets all this additional tax revenue for new programs, he gets to cut the military, which Democrats have been calling for for years, and he gets to blame Republicans for it.”

We’ll find out what happens later next week. All we know for sure at this point is that January will be Scapegoat Awareness Month.

President Obama is now vacationing in Hawaii. While there, he delivered a speech at a memorial service for Senator Daniel Inouye. It was the perfect opportunity for Obama to spend a few minutes reflecting on the fascinating life of… Obama:
