Jay Carney sums up the problem

Many Democrats have been urging President Obama to bypass Congress and take action to unilaterally raise the debt ceiling. Yesterday, while rejecting that suggestion (farewell, trillion dollar coin), Jay Carney summed up the reason we’re buried under an ever-expanding mountain of debt:
“There are only two options to deal with the debt limit: Congress can pay its bills, or it can fail to act and put the nation into default,” White House press secretary Jay Carney said in a statement. “Congress needs to do its job.”
“Pay its bills”? Only in DC can raising the debt ceiling to over $18 trillion (and beyond) to accommodate a refusal to rein in an insane level of deficit spending be considered “paying the bills.”
