Obama to announce gun plans tomorrow

David Gregory has already received his waiver.

From the Washington Post:

President Obama will unveil a sweeping set of gun-control proposals at midday Wednesday, including an assault weapons ban, universal background checks and limits on the number of bullets magazines can hold, according to sources familiar with the plans.

The announcement, to be delivered at the White House, is also expected to include a slate of up to 19 executive actions that the Obama administration can take on its own to attempt to limit gun violence. The White House has invited key lawmakers as well as gun-control advocates to appear at Wednesday’s policy rollout, according to two officials who have been invited to the event.

It’s almost as if the White House is getting a commission on each new NRA membership.

Biden said he was “shooting for Tuesday” to get his recommendations to the president, and mission accomplished.

Will these plans include asking supporters to post “this home is proudly gun free” yard signs so we know which residences are safe? Doubtful. We’ll find out tomorrow when Obama makes his announcement while surrounded by kids (“For the children?”…”Check.”).

Here’s a little more about the possible executive order end of things:

The focus on executive orders is the result of the White House and other Democrats acknowledging the political difficulty of enacting any new gun legislation, a topic Biden did not address in Monday’s meeting.

The executive actions could include giving the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention authority to conduct national research on guns, more aggressive enforcement of existing gun laws and pushing for wider sharing of existing gun databases among federal and state agencies, members of Congress in the meeting said.

“It was all focusing on enforcing existing law, administering things like improving the background database, things like that that do not involve a change in the law but enforcing and making sure that the present law is administered as well as possible,” said Rep. Bobby Scott (D-Va.).

“Guns”… “disease”… get it? Or maybe the CDC might only be asked to get involved because the White House wants you to know the steps to take to protect your gun from getting the flu (Rugers are particularly susceptible to H3N2). No specific mention yet of what will be done about “magazine clips,” but I’m sure they will be addressed as well.

Among all the chatter of the past couple of days, one subject that should be getting most of the attention but is instead being shoved to the back of the line is mental illness. Speaking of Harry Reid, the Senate Majority Leader said Congress is unlikely to pass an assault weapons ban. However, a zero-tolerance crackdown on finger-guns is already taking place, possibly to be followed by a ban on high capacity nail clippers.

By the way, a petition to make our nation’s leaders much safer is now less than 3,300 2,700 signatures away from the necessary threshold required for a response from the White House.
