It’ll be a touching farewell. Instead of a gold watch, the Energy Department’s plan is to present Chu with a bronzed whistling robot.

From Fox News:

Energy Secretary Steven Chu will be leaving his post, the White House confirmed Friday, exiting the administration at the start of President Obama’s second term after a rocky tenure.

In his resignation letter, Chu said he intend to stay on board “past the end of February” to help the department find his successor.

Chu’s leadership has drawn sharp criticism from Republicans who questioned his controversial support for and handling of a $528 million federal loan to solar panel maker Solyndra before the company filed for bankruptcy.

Chu’s letter to department employees is here. Short version: “We flushed a lot of taxpayer money together… it’s been great.”

Chu will depart without fulfilling his goal of $10 a gallon gas, but maybe his successor can do a better job. He also took some parting shots at “man caused climate-change” skeptics — except select friendlies who profit tens of millions of dollars from oil emirates.

Chu also said the U.S. needs to more closely emulate China’s obviously superior “clean energy” efforts (“every time a pollution mask is sold a green angel gets its wings”).

Tribute’s to Chu’s tenure are pouring in.

President Obama said this:

“Steve has been a great friend, a tremendous colleage, over the past four years working on a whole range of energy issues but also designing a cap to plug a hole in the middle of the Gulf of Mexico when nobody else could figure it out,” the president said. “And that’s typical of the incredible contributions that he’s made to this country.

He did?
