John Conyers: Please don’t use the term ‘illegal immigrants’ — say ‘out of status’ or ‘new Americans’

The House opened its first hearing on immigration today, Rep. John Conyers (D-on’t say “illegal”), a walking argument for congressional term limits, tried to lay down a few ground rules before things got going:
I hope no one uses the term “illegal immigrants” here today. Our citizens are not… the people in this country are not illegal, they are out of status, they are new Americans that are immigrants, and I think that we can forge a path to citizenship that will be able to pass muster.
Chances are Conyers won’t know if the offending term ends up being used in subsequent legislation because he probably won’t read the bill anyway:
Side note: John Conyers’ wife Monica, a former Detroit City Councilwoman, was released from federal prison in December after doing some things that were “out of status.”
