Fore-ward!

Now that every American who wants a job has one, it’s time for some rest. The White House confirmed that today President Obama played a round of golf with Tiger Woods — presumably after a spirited session of skeet shooting:

Mr Obama, an avid golfer, and Woods, the 14-time major winner, who won his 75th title last month, teed off at the Floridian Yacht and Golf Club.

The president is on a three-day golf getaway in Florida, while his wife, Michelle, and their daughters, Malia and Sasha, are skiing in Colorado. He got some instructional tips on Saturday from Woods’ former swing coach, Butch Harmon.

Josh Earnest, a White House spokesman, said Mr Obama and Woods were joined on the course by US Trade Representative Ron Kirk and Jim Crane, the resort owner who also owns the Houston Astros baseball team.

As Obama and Woods conversed privately, one of them was overheard saying how fortunate he is to be able to golf for a living. Tiger concurred.

Ed Driscoll remembered this prescient but awkwardly timed January 2010 cover of Golf Digest that has now been brought to life:

null

As for today’s round, I’m not quite getting the “historic day in golf” claim. We saw similar conditions when the nation’s first first black president played a round with a famous golfer all while a cloud of marital infidelity floated over the course back when Greg Norman teed it up with Bill Clinton. “Historic”? I don’t think so.
