Update: NY judge says not so fast.
*****

Twas the night before the latest Big Nanny initiative kicks in:

Monday is the last day New Yorkers will be able to buy super-sized sugary drinks in New York City.

The cola crackdown goes into effect on Tuesday. The new regulation puts a 16-ounce limit on sugary drinks sold at city restaurants, movie theaters, sports venues and street carts and applies to both bottled and fountain drinks.

The sugary drink ban doesn’t include grocery stores… at least not yet.

There I go again using the word “ban.” Yesterday, Mayor Bloomberg went on television to remind everybody that he’s not banning anything — it’s called “portion control,” tubby:

If Bloomberg thinks people are too stupid to know what’s in their best interest how does he expect them to be able to do that multiple drink math?

And where are the environmentalists when you need them?

“I definitely believe it’s going to hurt my business,” said Mary Cira of Pronto Pizza, who said she had to toss nearly a $1,000 worth of 20 ounce and 2 liter bottles of soda. She’ll also have to reprint her menus.

Update: Beyond parody:

Come Tuesday city inspectors will be armed with 17-ounce cups to police New York City Mayor Bloomberg’s controversial new law banning large sodas and other sugary drinks.
[…]
‘The measuring cups that we will be issuing … will be able to contain 17 fluid ounces,’ Kass said.

Inspectors will issue violations when a cup is found to ‘clearly exceed’ 16 ounces ‘when measured in the inspector’s measuring cup,’ he added.

A sequel in the making — Paul Blart: City Fluid Ounce Measuring Cop
