I was afraid this would happen… or wouldn’t happen, to be more precise. There were two things working against an Ashley Judd candidacy: Her own party and her own mouth. Sometimes you can survive with one of the above working against you, but usually not both.

Many conservative bloggers are lamenting Judd’s decision, in a “writing about a Senate candidate who is a gaffeminist cross between Joe Biden and Marcy D’Arcy from Married With Children sure would have been fun” kind of way:

The dream is dead.

Damn.

Bummer.

We have been robbed.

Disappointed.

And let me add…

null

Ah, what might have been:

Actress Ashley Judd announced Wednesday she won’t run for U.S. Senate in Kentucky against Republican Leader Mitch McConnell, saying she had given serious thought to a campaign but decided her responsibilities and energy need to be focused on her family.

The former Kentucky resident tweeted her decision.

“Regretfully, I am currently unable to consider a campaign for the Senate. I have spoken to so many Kentuckians over these last few months who expressed their desire for a fighter for the people & new leader,” Judd wrote.

I’m hearing that Sen. McConnell’s unwillingness to square off with Judd in a series of pre-election debates in Scotland while standing in front of a CG backdrop of the Lexington skyline was one of the deal breakers.
