Stump the Congressman: ‘Rep. Markey, in your 36 year career, has there ever been a single time when you’ve opposed a tax increase?’

Today’s contestant on “Stump the Congressman” is Massachusetts Democrat Rep. Ed Markey, who is running in the special election to fill the Senate seat John Kerry vacated when he became secretary of state. Markey was asked if in all his 36 years in politics, if there’s ever been a time when he opposed a tax increase. “Deer in the headlights” ensued, followed by the obligatory “I’ll check into that and get back to you.”

Markey has reportedly voted in favor of higher taxes 271 times in his career, which unfortunately in Massachusetts is a resume enhancer. A record like that also wins support from fellow tax and spenders:
