An administration official departs for the welcoming climes of academia. That **almost never happens.

From the Associated Press:

U.S. officials say Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano is resigning to take a senior posting in the University of California system.

Napolitano told senior staff Friday she was leaving for California. Napolitano has led the department since the beginning of the Obama administration, just the third person to hold this post.

This might explain it:

Hey, the system worked!

The L.A. Times notes that the president of the University of California system is a “position usually held by an academic,” but J-Nap’s relationship with the people in charge of the federal trough were obviously taken into account:

UC officials believe that her Cabinet experiences –- which include helping to lead responses to hurricanes and tornadoes and overseeing some anti-terrorism measures — will help UC administer its federal energy and nuclear weapons labs and aid its federally funded research in medicine and other areas.
