With President Obama’s approval rating plunging, the White House has decided it’s time for laser-like focus on more laser-like focus on the economy. The alleged bottom line here is that if people would stop distracting the White House with make-believe scandals, they’d have had the economy fixed long ago:

White House press secretary Jay Carney on Wednesday defended President Obama’s planned pivot to economic issues, arguing it was time to shift the discussion in Washington “beyond the phony scandals that have consumed so much attention here.”

“He’s focused on the economy,” said Carney on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe.” “He’s not focused on pretend scandals.”

Four dead in Benghazi while families continue to be stonewalled on answers and an IRS official pleading the Fifth while the trail of “who ordered the extra scrutiny” keeps climbing higher up the latter are phony scandals?

To his credit, Joe Scarborough did a pretty good job of calling Carney out in the video below. Notice too that Carney referred to “phony scandals” and then at the end of the interview claimed that we “need to get to the bottom of what happened.” Even Jay Carney doesn’t believe Jay Carney any more.

Click “play” to roll tape on Carney’s laser-like focus on self-parody:

Update: “Phony scandal” is the talking point of the day, because President Obama also used that term in today’s “I’m going to focus like a laser that is focusing like a laser on the economy… again” speech.
