John Kerry: When I said a deal with Russia was impossible, I did that knowing full well it was possible

“Meant to do that”

We continue to witness the “Accidentally on Purpose” (or is that “On Purpose Accidentally”?) method of diplomacy, where decisiveness is a weakness and inaccurate/ill-advised predictions are the cornerstones of Smart Power:

Secretary of State John Kerry said Saturday, after reaching a tentative agreement with Russia to disarm Syria of chemical weapons, that his earlier statement about the impossibility of such a plan was in fact “the language of diplomacy.”

“I purposefully made the statements,” Kerry said in Geneva, Switzerland, after reaching the framework of an agreement with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov. “And I did indeed say it was impossible and [Syrian President Bashar al-Assad] won’t do it, even as I hoped it would be possible and wanted him to do it. And the language of diplomacy sometimes requires that you put things to the test, and we did.”

Under Kerry’s deal with Russia, Assad reportedly gets to stay in power, is supposed to dispose of his chemical weapons by mid-2014, but must present an inventory of them this week. Translating Kerry’s “language of diplomacy” (a technique globally trademarked as “Lurch Forward™”) into English, that sounds a lot like “the honor system.” Good luck with that.

I’ve used this video before, and at some point it should appear in the opening credits of a televised adaptation of Kerry’s autobiography, “Damn I’m Good!”
