Ted Cruz mega speech under way: I rise in opposition to Obamacare [live video]; Update: Ends after more than 21 hours
**Written by Doug Powers
Update: 10 a.m. ET Wednesday and Cruz is still speaking. See video below. As of this moment he’s been speaking for 19 hours. Later, bring on Harry Reid’s “anarchy” whining.
The Senate procedural vote on the continuing resolution is scheduled for tomorrow, and Harry Reid will probably round up enough votes to gut the “defund Obamacare” provision and send it back to the House. However, the debate is still going on, and Texas Sen. Ted Cruz is now up and speaking against Obamacare.
Cruz has pledged to keep going until he “can no longer stand”:
Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, rose to speak on the Senate floor at 2:41 p.m. He stood up to in opposition to Obamacare, he said. And he said he would continue to speak until he could no longer stand.
It’s not a filibuster. But it’s looking like it may be a very, very long speech from the Texas senator who has been the center of attention in D.C.’s budget fight, and the Senate leader in a doomed-to-fail movement to strip funding for Obamacare out of any resolution that Congress passes to fund the government. If Congress fails to come to an agreement, the government will shutdown at the end of September.
Ted Cruz stood up to “make D.C. listen,” he said repeatedly. “Washington depends on the American people not paying attention.”
Cruz has been getting a little help from Rand Paul along the way (Cruz has yielded the floor to Paul, and Sen. Mike Lee as well):

The “this is futile” milquetoast Republicans in Congress (paging Sen. McCain) forget that people need to hear this stuff! Those Republicans who say Obamacare is a bad law but don’t forcefully speak out against it at every opportunity are the reasons the Republicans face so many uphill battles, can’t gain enough control to take real steps to get rid of terrible laws like this, and by doing so provide the best examples why the party needs a purge.
Cruz-ism alert: “Flying flip.”

Update: Cruz ended at noon ET after more than 21 hours. A cloture vote on the continuing resolution will take place at about 1 p.m. ET.
