Obama won’t negotiate on debt ceiling; Harry Reid wheels out gov’t shutdown doomsday clock

With a shutdown looming, President Obama is still not budging on his unwillingness to negotiate on unconditionally increasing the debt ceiling, because not making room for all the bills that have been racked up irresponsibly would be irresponsible, or something like that:

Some Republicans also say they will not back an increase in the $16.7 trillion debt ceiling unless the health care law is changed. On Thursday, House GOP leaders discussed an option to raise the debt ceiling only if the health care plan is delayed for a year.

Obama said the debt ceiling gives the government authority to borrow money to pay its bills; otherwise, the government will default. The Treasury Department reports that it will be unable to repay debt starting Oct. 17.

Congress is obligated to increase the debt ceiling without strings because the nation’s “full faith and credit” is at stake, and “you don’t mess with that,” Obama said. He again vowed he would not negotiate on the issue.

This is such a serious issue that Obama from 2013 won’t even negotiate with Obama from 2008 on what it means to continually raise the debt ceiling:

Obama’s battling, as he might say, “headwinds” on his pet issues these days. Two-thirds of Americans don’t believe the debt ceiling should be unconditionally increased over and over, and a majority oppose Obamacare. Obama’s sales pitches that channel the used car salesman from National Lampoon’s Vacation (“you think you hate it now, but wait’ll you drive it”) don’t seem to be moving the needle on the public confidence meter.

As the showdown goes on, Harry Reid has gotten his doomsday clock out of mothballs:

The Republicans should wheel in a debt clock and put it next to that.

Also, Harry Reid is the winner of this week’s “Self Awareness Fail” award.
