NBC’s Olympic coverage performs a pivotal experiment in understatement

During coverage of the opening ceremony at the Sochi Olympics, in a pre-packaged segment on NBC, the narration referred to decades of murderous Soviet-era communism as a “one of modern history’s pivotal experiments.”

Understatement of the year?

Here’s a Vine of the “pivotal experiments” part. I think Putin asked them to refer to the era as a “collective semi-happy dance,” but a defiant NBC refused:
