Spud control we can believe in: FLOTUS blasts GOP for trying to feed kids potatoes or something

Michelle Obama has an op-ed in the New York Times in which she criticizes House Republicans in part for attempting to add potatoes to the list of things that can be purchased with WIC coupons:

Right now, the House of Representatives is considering a bill to override science by mandating that white potatoes be included on the list of foods that women can purchase using WIC dollars. Now, there is nothing wrong with potatoes. The problem is that many women and children already consume enough potatoes and not enough of the nutrient-dense fruits and vegetables they need. That’s why the Institute of Medicine — the nonpartisan, scientific body that advises on the standards for WIC — has said that potatoes should not be part of the WIC program.

Republicans are sometimes accused of not caring if poor kids starve, and now the first lady is saying the GOP wants to make them too fat by encouraging more potato consumption. Go figure.

Do you know what this means? The potato industry must not have very strong ties to Big Labor. I get the feeling that if there were an “International Brotherhood of Baked, Scalloped, Mashed and Au Gratin Potato Workers” union that backed Dems every election this “war against WIC-funded potatoes” wouldn’t be happening.

Ann Althouse has a good analysis of Michelle Obama’s settled potato science here.

And if you’re strapped for time, this is FLOTUS’ entire NYT op-ed condensed into just a few seconds:
