Jay Carney announced on Friday that he was stepping down as Obama’s press secretary. Next week Carney is expected to claim the president learned about his resignation from news reports.

I won’t believe that Carney is stepping down as press secretary until there’s independent confirmation from somebody other than Jay Carney.

Carney had recently issued his one millionth flat-out denial — shattering previous records shared by Bob Gibbs and John Kerry’s plastic surgeon — and as a result the thrill was gone and it’s time to move on.

President Obama showed up at Carney’s Friday presser, which is when “the hug” happened:

They coordinate talking points down to the placement of commas but couldn’t have rehearsed a dude-hug?

I’m calling for the Obama/Carney awkward hug photo to be digitally inserted into the Blue Oyster Bar scene of the 30th anniversary re-release of “Police Academy.” It deserves to be immortalized in the annals of awkward embraces:

Update: Awwwww.
