Congrats, Diane Douglas! Grass-roots activist ousts pro-Common Core state supe in Arizona GOP primary
Most of the rest of the nation has never heard of Diane Douglas. But the education establishment in D.C. and Common Core’s overlords — looking at you, U.S. Chamber of Commerce, Gates Foundation, Jeb Bush, etc. etc. etc — will all know her name tomorrow morning. Grass-roots parents and anti-Common Core activists in Arizona know and love her. So do readers of this blog. In May, I endorsed Douglas’s upstart candidacy for state superintendent in Arizona. She battled an entrenched GOP candidate, John Huppenthal, who enjoyed all the perks and privileges of incumbency. Huppenthal derided parents as “barbarians at the gate” and doubled down on his support for Common Core. Flashback:
In Arizona, the Republican state superintendent John Huppenthal is a zealous defender of Common Core. Earlier this week, he savaged opponents as “barbarians at the gate.” This ad hominem attack is straight from the playbook of other elitist Common Core peddlers (see Arne Duncan’s bigoted sneer at “white suburban moms”, Missouri state rep. Mike Lair’s swipe at “paranoid” parents, and Jeb Bush’s snit fit against critics.)
Smug Huppenthal is confident he’ll cruise to victory on the August 26th primary.
But parents in Arizona have a choice.
Mom and former school board member Diane Douglas is in the race to unseat arrogant Huppenthal and combat Common Core. She’s principled, clear-thinking, and bold.
“My vision is to put Arizona’s education back in the hands of Arizonans, she says. “We know what’s best for our children and we don’t need people from Washington telling us how to educate our children.”
She vows to:
Use every power of the office and all my energies to ensure the AZ Dept & our State Board of Education protect and defend our 10th Amendment right to direct and control
the education of our children.
Work with our Republican legislators to protect our children, and their families, from the unconstitutional invasion of their privacy through massive federally mandated data collection.
Tonight, I’m happy to report, voters tossed Huppenthal and his elitist backside out of office. With a shoestring budget and relentless grass-roots campaigning, Diane Douglas slayed a Fed Ed giant.
It CAN be done. It WILL be done. It MUST be done.
Thank you, Diane, for your courage, principle, inspiration, and leadership. On to victory in November.blog comments powered by Disqus
