If you’re in a hurry, here’s the shorter version of the U.N.’s announcement:

Warm up the private jets and prepare Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan’s “superyacht” for departure, because actor Leonardo DiCaprio has been charged with helping save the planet from the ravages of fossil fuel emissions:

Leonardo DiCaprio has been tapped by the United Nations to be honored with the title of Messenger of Peace, and the actor has been asked to speak on Sept. 23 at the U.N. Climate Summit to address the topic of climate change, the international organization announced on Tuesday.

“It’s an honor to accept the role of UN Messenger of Peace on Climate Change and to support the Secretary General in his efforts to address one of the most important issues we face as a global community,” said DiCaprio in a statement. “I feel a moral obligation to speak out at this key moment in human history – it is a moment for action. How we respond to the climate crisis in the coming years will likely determine the fate of humanity and our planet.”

DiCaprio is already set to take firsthand sub-orbital observations of the planet’s health from Richard Branson’s Virgin Galactic spaceship, which has a **negligible carbon footprint (**spelled h-u-g-e):

According to the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration’s environmental assessment of the launch and re-entry of Virgin Galactic’s spacecraft, one launch-land cycle emits about 30 tons of carbon dioxide, or about five tons per passenger. That is about five times the carbon footprint of a flight from Singapore to London.

Over one-third of Virgin Galactic is owned by an investment firm in Abu Dhabi, which is also where a spaceport will reportedly be built. Abu Dhabi of course made its fortune selling carbon credits and Fiskers. Welcome aboard, Leo!

The choice of DiCaprio for “messenger of climate change peace” proves that the U.N. continues its reign as the world’s biggest, most expensive joke.
