Right off the top: Why are family members of government officials eligible to receive government money at all? The husband of a member of Congress can accept hundreds of thousands of dollars in government grants made available by a bill his wife voted to pass and we’re just supposed to assume everything’s on the up and up. In the real world, if it’s discovered the person who won a 50/50 raffle at a Bingo hall is the second cousin of the person who drew the winner, the building gets burned down.

Via Daily Caller:

North Carolina’s Secretary of Environmental and Natural Resources is seeking an investigation into Democratic Senator Kay Hagan over how a company co-owned by her husband received $250,644 from the 2009 Stimulus Bill.

The Charlotte Observer is reporting:

Secretary of Energy and Natural Resources John Skvarla on Monday asked his staff to seek more information about a 2010 energy grant from the company co-owned by the husband of Democratic U.S. Sen. Kay Hagan.

Not only did Hagan’s husband’s company receive stimulus funds, but reportedly kept a large amount of unspent money without returning it to the government.

Video from Fox46:

Hagan’s excuse? The call for an investigation is just proof that her darn Republican opponent is corrupt:

Hagan spokeswoman Sadie Weiner told the Observer, “In an act of 11th hour desperation, it appears that Speaker Tillis is illegally using political allies in the McCrory administration to smear Sen. Hagan’s family and influence an election.”

When a TV station sponsors a prize giveaway, one of the main rules is that people who work for the TV station aren’t eligible to win or else management could suffer an FCC-induced migraine. Avoiding “appearance of impropriety” is a must when giving away flat-screen TVs and concert tickets, but doling out millions in taxpayer dollars to people who just happen to be family and cronies? Not so much.
