Sony Pictures says a hack is the reason some upcoming movies have been made available for illegal download:

At least five new movies from Sony Pictures are being devoured on copyright-infringing file-sharing hubs online in the wake of the hack attack that hobbled the studio earlier in the week.

Copies of DVD screeners of four unreleased Sony movies including the upcoming “Annie” are getting some unwelcome early exposure, but nothing compared to the frenzy enveloping “Fury,” the war pic still in theaters since bowing last month.

North Korea, who just last year sent a threatening fax as a demonstration of superior NK technology, is among the hacking suspects:

Sony Pictures Entertainment is investigating to determine if hackers working on behalf of North Korea might be responsible for a cyber attack that knocked out the studio’s computer network earlier this week, the technology news site Re/code reported.

The attack occurred a month before Sony Pictures, a unit of Sony Corp, is to release “The Interview.” The movie is a comedy about two journalists who are recruited by the CIA to assassinate North Korean leader Kim Jong Un. The Pyongyang government denounced the film as “undisguised sponsoring of terrorism, as well as an act of war” in a letter to U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon in June.

After North Korea complained to Ban Ki-moon, a U.N. panel blamed global warming and then surrendered to Pyongyang unconditionally.

If Kim Jong-un was behind the alleged Sony hack, those movies might soon be available on a file-sharing site called Norkster. So much for Sony’s appeasement.

If North Korea was responsible for the Sony hack, intelligence officials believe it had to originate from the area pointed out above
