According to Obama, he contributes to ‘less opportunity’ for kids

At the “Conversation on Poverty” at Georgetown University Tuesday, President Obama admitted to being part of the problem, except he pretended not to realize it:

“Now, part of what’s happened is that — and this is where Arthur and I would probably have some disagreements. We don’t dispute that the free market is the greatest producer of wealth in history — it has lifted billions of people out of poverty. We believe in property rights, rule of law, so forth. But there has always been trends in the market in which concentrations of wealth can lead to some being left behind. And what’s happened in our economy is that those who are doing better and better — more skilled, more educated, luckier, having greater advantages
— are withdrawing from sort of the commons — kids start going to private schools; kids start working out at private clubs instead of the public parks. An anti-government ideology then disinvests from those common goods and those things that draw us together. And that, in part, contributes to the fact that there’s less opportunity for our kids, all of our kids.”

Video of that portion:

Obama attended private school as a kid, and of course his kids also attend private school. But if the rest of you could just make sure your kids stay in the “common area” the country would be a much fairer place. The point Obama was attempting to make though wasn’t that it’s a problem that the well-to-do send their kids to private schools, but rather government won’t make the “investments” in the “commons” to make public schooling as effective as a private education (over half a trillion a year isn’t cutting it so more money is of course always the answer).

Maybe a cheaper way to “level the educational playing field” would be to rename every school in America “Sidwell Friends Academy.” Are the elites who send their kids there devoted enough to “fairness” to call for that? Didn’t think so.

Read the transcript of the event if you can stand it and you’ll find out that Obama also argued in favor of more localized government instead of the kind of bloated, central government he’s spent his career promoting. If only we could harness the power of Obama’s contradictions and hypocrisy.
